MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) ? Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn said Saturday that separating the Great Lakes and Mississippi River systems is the "ultimate solution" to prevent voracious Asian carp from overrunning the lakes, a potential step toward resolving a longstanding regional feud.

During a meeting with governors of several neighboring states, Quinn said it would be a massive and costly undertaking to rework the Chicago canal project that linked the two giant watersheds a century ago. He defended Illinois' efforts to block the advance of silver and bighead carp toward the lakes by hiring commercial fishermen and operating an electric barrier, but acknowledged more needs to be done.

"Ultimately, I think we have to separate the basins," Quinn said. "I really feel that is the ultimate solution."

His comment during a Council of Great Lakes Governors panel discussion on this Lake Huron resort island drew applause from government officials, environmental advocates and others in attendance. "I hope you're clapping when Congress comes to invest the money," Quinn said. "It has to be a national project."

But Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, a Republican whose state has sided with Illinois in opposing separation, told reporters his position had not changed. It would "cost thousands of Hoosier jobs and cause additional harm to many Hoosiers to manufacture and grow our products," Pence said. "It's important that we deal with this issue but it's also important that we deal with it in a way preserves the logistical advantages and opportunity to move commerce through our region."

Asian carp were imported in the 1970s to cleanse Deep South aquaculture and sewage treatment ponds. Some escaped during floods and have migrated northward in the Mississippi River and its tributaries. They have advanced to within 55 miles of Lake Michigan in the Illinois River, which connects with a shipping canal and other waters that reach Lake Michigan.

The Great Lakes region has been sharply divided over how to deal with the threat. Michigan went to court in an unsuccessful effort to force closure of Chicago-area shipping locks, then joined four other states ? Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania ? in a lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Chicago's water district, claiming their refusal to physically separate the watersheds was creating a public nuisance. A federal judge tossed out the case in December.

Indiana and Illinois have contended that separation would boost flood risks and disrupt water tourism and commercial shipping in the busy metro area. They say the electric barrier in the shipping canal is keeping the carp at bay. But scientists have detected Asian carp DNA in dozens of water samples collected farther upstream, some just a few miles from Lake Michigan.

Quinn told reporters that any separation project would have to address economic and safety concerns. He said he was "intrigued" by a 2012 study that proposed three alternatives for placing dam-like structures in the Chicago waterways. The Great Lakes Commission estimated the price tag would range from $3.2 billion to $9.5 billion.

"I personally favor rigorous study of what the costs are and what has to be done in order to carry it out," said Quinn, a Democrat. "There's no question it would be a very expensive endeavor. But if it's necessary to have clean water in the Great Lakes in the 21st century, it's worth looking at."

Even though he stopped well short of endorsing a particular plan, many at the conference described Quinn's embrace of the separation idea as significant.

"I think it's great to see people talking about longer-term solutions," said Rick Snyder, Michigan's Republican governor. Chris Kolb, president of the Michigan Environmental Council, called it "a very positive step forward."

"There's been so much rancor and disagreement about this issue," said Joel Brammeier, president of the Alliance for the Great Lakes, a Chicago-based environmental group. "To hear Gov. Quinn make a point of bringing it up in this forum speaks volumes."

Daddy dearest! Smiths join other dad-son duos

Pop culture

Gael Fashingbauer Cooper TODAY

In "After Earth," which opens Friday, father and son Will and Jaden Smith play ... a father and son. But from there on out, things are pretty different than their real-life relationship. The film is set in the future, and the Smiths play a seasoned general and his young recruit son who crash-land on an abandoned Earth, meaning Jaden Smith must set out on a dangerous mission to save his father. We're guessing the closest 14-year-old Jaden comes to this kind of thing in real life is when he has to carry a dangerously hot latte to his dad at the Beverly Hills Starbucks.

Columbia Pictures

Will and Jaden Smith play father and son in "After Earth."

The Smiths are far from the only father-son entertainers who've worked together -- and many often slip right into their real-life roles, playing dad and child onscreen as well as off. Here are just a few.

Jerry and Ben Stiller
Jerry Stiller was a comic star before son Ben, born in 1965, was even out of diapers. (So was Ben's mom, Jerry's comedy partner, Anne Meara.) Dad and son have traded quips in numerous movies -- perhaps most memorably in "Zoolander." They've played father and son twice, in 1987 comedy "Hot Pursuit" and 20 years later in "The Heartbreak Kid."

Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen
Here's a rare non-acting duo. Many sons join the family business, but few sons can say their family business is a rock 'n' roll band. Wolfgang Van Halen had music in his blood -- he was even named for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. And in 2006, when he was just 15, he became the bassist for dad Eddie's famed group, Van Halen.

Tom and Colin Hanks.

Tom and Colin Hanks
Tom Hanks has his own stellar movie career of course, but in 2008, he played the father of his real-life son, Colin, in the well-reviewed comedy-drama "The Great Buck Howard." In the film, young Hanks defies his dad and quits law school to work with a has-been mentalist (John Malkovich). In real life, we're betting Colin is more likely to follow dad's advice than disregard it.

Kirk, Michael and Cameron Douglas
Kudos to Clan Douglas for pulling off that rarest three-generation film. In the aptly named 2003 film "It Runs in the Family," Kirk Douglas plays the father of real-life son Michael, and Michael plays the father of his real-life son Cameron. And Michael Douglas' own mother, actress Diana Dill, plays his mother. Sadly, the family affair wasn't embraced by critics -- the late Roger Ebert wrote that, "despite its gimmick casting, the movie ultimately goes nowhere."

GABRIEL BOUYS / AFP/Getty Images

Donald and Kiefer Sutherland.

Kiefer and Donald Sutherland
Kiefer Sutherland started out his career in Neil Simon's 1983 film "Max Dugan Returns," and while his father Donald was also in the movie, they did not play father and son. The two famous Sutherland boys also starred in the 1996 adaptation of John Grisham's "A Time to Kill," though again, not as family members -- the elder Sutherland played a liberal lawyer, the younger a KKK member.

Martin and Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen's dad, Martin, was a recurring guest star playing the dad of Charlie's character in the first season of sitcom "Anger Management." His character has now been added as a regular. This isn't the first time the Sheens played father and son -- you may remember them from "Wall Street," when Martin Sheen played the blue-collar union-loyal dad of Charlie's slick yuppie go-getter. The Kickass Processors That Will Power Your Next Computer

Bits and pieces of info about Intel's brand new 4th generation processors have been dripping out for months now. Good graphics, crazy battery life. Exciting stuff. Finally, though, we've got a full view of guts that'll power most of next year's computers, and they'll be available starting June 4th. The future looks very, very bright.

To put these chips?previously known as Haswell?in their proper perspective, remember that Intel has what it calls a tick-tock system when it comes to processor upgrades. The tick is a smaller, incremental upgrade where things get shrunk down and tuned up. The tock is where the big changes get made. This is the tock.

At a glance, the 4th gen chips don't appear wildly different from their predecessors. While the chips have grown just slightly in size, from 160nm to 177nm, they're built on the same 22nm process. So why slightly bigger? To accommodate the biggest graphics on-die space Intel's ever had.

And that's just for starters. Here's the full rundown of what these bad boys can do.

Bigger, better battery life

What's maybe most exciting about Intel's 4th generation cores is the leap ahead in battery life. It's the biggest in Intel's history. The gains come from a few different places. For starters, the 4th gen chips pull less power than their predecessors for CPU tasks, but they've also got some sophisticated sleep states and panel refreshing are able to cut back on power used by the rest of the system as well.

When it comes to practical applications, that means that you'll be getting 9 hours of HD video playback where you used to get only 6, and similar increases when you're just using your device for light-use things like browsing the web, or working in a word processor. The really huge jump is for standby time though. With previous-gen Ivy Bridge cores, you'd be lucky to get four or five days of standby life on a full charge. With a 4th gen core, Intel's promising a number more like 10 or even 13. And this is all with no better batteries required; the gains are purely from more efficient performance.

To explain it simply, devices running on 4th gen chips will be able to sleep way more often than what you've got right now. Essentially, Haswell's introducing a new kind of sleep state that marries all the power saving qualities of an actual, non-responsive sleep state with being totally awake. So now, when you close the lid (or turn off the display), your device can take a power nap, but still be damn quick waking back up. And those little naps count for a lot.

Integrated graphics that are actually awesome

Intel had already let slip some of the details about its sweet new integrated graphics brand a few weeks ago. In sort, Intel's Iris graphics are able to hold their own in a way they never have before, running stuff like Bioshock Infinite at playable speeds with moderate settings. Granted, there's still nothing quite like have discrete graphics in your laptop, but these 4th gen cores do built-in damn well.

Super small laptops and convertibles running U-series processors chips in the 15w range are going to be treated to a nice performance increase in graphics power thanks to Intel HD Graphics 5000, the next step up in Intel's traditional integrated graphics line. But laptops with more power-hungry chips in the 28w range are treated to Iris, and real chunky, performance-first devices in the 50-ishw neighborhood and up are going to see even bigger gains with top of the line Iris Pro, using on-die eDRAM high-speed memory. But all of them will be able to handle things like OpenCL, DX11.1, OpenGL4.1, making things like playing Tomb Raider on your laptop possible.

And the graphics advancements aren't just limited to gaming. The new chips also support three-screen displays and UHD (4K) output by default. And even if you're not pushing that kind of video right now, it's going to be good to have the option when super hi-res displays start getting more affordable.

Getting your video onto other, bigger screens that aren't attached to your device is going to get easier too. 4th gen chips will have Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) 4.1 built in. It's not as open as something like Miracast, but it does support wireless streaming of HD video, and it's already in some LG and Toshiba HDTVs. And with it baked into 4th gen Intel devices from here on out, you can bet that trend will continue.

A high bar for tiny computers

In reality, there's really no such thing as an "ultrabook," but that doesn't stop Intel from laying down a definition of what it thinks a thin, ultraportable laptop should be, and what a thin, ultraportable laptop on current hardware can handle.

And when Intel sits down to describe its dream scenario for an "ultrabook," it's setting the standard pretty high. We're talking touchscreens and voice control capability across the board, the ability to handle at least 9 hours of idle time on Windows 8, at least 6 straight hours of HD video, and seven days of standby time. And damn snappy too; we're talking wake times under three seconds.

Granted, nobody's going to be forcing OEMs to live up to these kind of standards, and they're going to build whatever the hell they want as usual. But it definitely says something about what Intel things is possible?and important?for even the slimmest of the slim this time around. And if these ideal ultrabook specs are any indication of the reality we'll actually see, slim laptops won't have to skimp on key features.

Detachables

Windows 8 put the dream of a real computer that's also a real tablet on the to-do list for manufacturers everywhere. The onslaught of tablet-laptop hybrids alongside Microsoft's own first-party Surface push shows it. But no one's really hit that sweet spot yet. For the most part, at best you get a tablet with a keyboard. Or occasionally something weirder.

Intel's aiming to bridge that gap this generation with a new line of ultra-low power, but still fully-featured mobile processors: the Y-series. In the past, 17W U-series processors have been the brains of ultrabooks everywhere. Detachables and almost-a-tablet slate PCs have been stuck with low power chips that aren't even in the same ballpark, like Atom or ARM.

Now, the U-series is reaching new power lows by hitting 15 watts, but the Y series is taking things even further, dropping down to a ridiculously low 6w, specifically for use in ultra portables where all those guts have to fit behind the glass.

With Y-series chips under the hood, detachables should actually be able to hang with the rest of the crew. They'll still be at the bottom of the list when it comes to capability, but they won't have to sit at the kids' table any more, stuck with a processor that's not quite the real thing.

Don't forget the desktops

And if, by chance, you still have a desktop and you've got no interest in going mobile, it's not a bad time to check out an all-in-one either. Battery life's not really an issue there, but Intel's 4th gen cores have a lot to offer when it comes to performance, whether it's just office stuff, video editing, or the occasional game. All in a package that's probably a bit more interesting than your dusty old tower.

Bottom line

Hopefully you waited to buy a laptop, because these are the sorts of bonuses you'll be getting when 4th gen cores start rolling out this summer. There's still going to be a little bit of a wait until things start hitting store shelves, but you can bet we'll see a fresh new line of Macs trotted out at WWDC, and you can bet they'll be repping Haswell.

We might not be post-PC yet, but everything that has to rely on a battery is about to get a whole hell of a lot better, and a lot less tethered to the wall. And who doesn't want that?

Here?s how Microsoft hopes to reignite interest in Windows

Windows 8.1 Preview Start Button

As we learned on Wednesday, Microsoft will indeed be bringing back the Start button for Windows 8.1. But Engadget, which has posted a lengthy preview of Windows 8.1, says that the Start button may not quite be what many users were expecting. According to the site, the new Start button isn?t ?a return to fly-out menu trees? of older versions of Windows but instead makes it look ?more like the Live Tiles are popping up on top of the desktop? when you click it. While this is sure to disappoint some users who were hoping for a Windows 7-type experience, Microsoft is hoping that it will make for an easier transition between the classic desktop view and the touch-centric Live Tile view on the Metro display.?

[More from BGR: Not afraid to fail: Google Glass spat highlights clashing cultures at Apple and Google]

Microsoft itself outlines more features of Windows 8.1 at its own blog, including the ability to resize tiles into larger and smaller sizes to make your Start menu less cluttered and the ability to access the All Apps menu simply by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Microsoft also detailed an improved search capability that lets users search for terms on a universal basis instead of forcing them to search in separate categories such as apps, settings and files.?The new search feature should be a particularly welcome relief for people who simply want to find something on their computers without having to sift through multiple search options first.

[More from BGR: Can the Moto X compete with Apple?s iPhone 5S and Samsung?s Galaxy Note III?]

Microsoft has also updated its PC Settings feature so that all settings are now in one place and users don?t have to go to their Control Panel in desktop mode to access additional features.

While it?s too early to say whether Windows 8.1 will appease its many critics, Microsoft does seem to have taken some criticisms to heart and is implementing changes based on user feedback.

Soft data, commodity prices take TSX to one-week low

By Solarina Ho

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index retreated sharply on Friday as lower commodity prices triggered a slump in shares of natural resource companies and weak economic data out of Europe and the United States dampened investor sentiment.

While almost every major sector declined, the index still looked on track for a gain in May, reversing losses in the previous two months.

South of the border, U.S. stocks ended down 1 percent on Friday, but all three index were positive for the month, with the S&P 500 <.spx> rising 14.34 percent so far this year - its best first five months since 1997.

The TSX, which is up about 1.6 percent this month and 1.7 percent for 2013, slipped 0.2 percent on the week.

"It wasn't really surprising to see a degree of profit-taking on the last day of the month," said Elvis Picardo, strategist and vice president of research at Global Securities.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> finished 96.13 points, or 0.8 percent lower, at 12,650.42, after falling as low as 12,620.08 earlier.

Data showed that unemployment reached a new high in the euro zone and inflation remained well below the European Central Bank's target. U.S. consumer spending fell in April for the first time in almost a year and inflation pressures were subdued, pointing to a slowdown in economic activity.

The commodities-exporting market, which has been hit sharply this year by volatility in resource prices, reacts to global economic trends because of its large exposure to materials and energy stocks.

"You boil all this (data) together and you get an economic stew around the world that continues to be one of positive growth, but certainly not as quick as most investors would like or up to capacity," said Craig Fehr, Canadian market strategist at Edward Jones in St. Louis, Missouri.

The growth prospects for the global economy look better in the second half of the year than in the first half, Fehr said.

"As the global growth story starts to improve, Canada's stock market and the economy should benefit from that," he added.

Official data showed rising exports helped rouse the Canadian economy from a sluggish second half of 2012 to grow at an annualized rate of 2.5 percent in the first quarter, the fastest pace in six quarters.

Nine of the index's 10 main sub-groups stumbled into negative territory.

The materials sector, which includes mining stocks, shed 0.6 percent. The prices of commodities such as gold and silver declined.

In company news, New Gold Inc agreed to acquire gold exploration company Rainy River Resources Ltd for about C$310 million ($301 million) to expand its asset base in Canada.

New Gold shares fell 8 percent to C$7.05, but Rainy River surged 34.8 percent to C$3.64.

A drop in oil prices pulled energy shares down 0.9 percent. Canadian Natural Resources Ltd slipped 3.3 percent to C$30.90. Suncor Energy gave back 1.9 percent to C$31.45.

Financials, the index's most heavily weighted sector, gave back 1 percent.

Royal Bank of Canada extended Thursday's losses amid uncertainty about its future growth after it reported in-line quarterly results. Canada's biggest bank lost 2.1 percent to C$61.53 and played the biggest role of any single stock in leading the market lower.
