French parliament votes in sexual harassment law

PARIS (AP) ? France's parliament on Tuesday approved legislation that makes sexual harassment a crime, addressing problems many say have existed for decades in the country.

The new law sets three levels of harassment, with the most serious ? in cases where the harasser has authority over the victim, the victim is younger than 15 years old, or multiple people carry out the harassment ? punishable by up to three years in prison.

The National Assembly passed the law after the Senate voted earlier in the day. Its passage comes more than two months after a court struck down the previous statute, saying it was too vague and failed to protect women.

The legislation covers offenses in universities, the housing market and job interviews. Single acts of sexual blackmail will be considered sexual harassment, whereas previously only repeated acts were.

In the United States, sexual harassment is a civil offense usually punishable by fines.

What're On the web Paid Reviews, and Do Online Paid Surveys Really

The truth is that the opinion counts, and businesses want to know what you believe. Usually you sign up with one of these marketing and research organizations as panelists that supply surveys focused to your demographic, geographic area and more specific traits that they are looking for. When signing up as a new panelist you will usually have to fill in a form and provide some general information that will support the marketing organization determine if you are a good match for a particular study. The best part is that once the business has your page the surveys will normally only deliver you surveys via email that you may answer and complete easily. The basic time needed to complete a particular questionnaire depends on several things, certainly one of which is the power to type. The faster that you?re able to sort obviously the faster you?ll be able to perform each survey.Another thing to keep yourself updated of is that there are a whole lot of scam websites out there claiming to be genuine questionnaire internet sites that you will make money on and they are merely a terrible scam looking to get you to invest your time on them, and they?ll pay you nothing. There are a great deal of respected companies though. One caution is that you get what you pay for, and while you could have to pay a little money to get an to date and real listing of recent survey companies it is well worth not having to discover the hard way doing work without the reward.Typically the survey completion time takes somewhere between 15-30 minutes and they will generally pay between $50-$80 for you doing a survey. You can also visit the Job Centre Online for more information how you can start making money online by getting a trustworthy organization that works with proper marketing and research companies to get you started today.

The Tendency to Procrastinate - Delish iBusiness Internet Business ...

It?s normal to have fluctuations in your productivity. Some days you?ll rip through that to-do list like a hot knife through butter and some days even the turtles are moving faster than you. What?s not normal is to consistently delay in completing tasks necessary to building a successful internet business; otherwise known as the tendency to procrastinate. This destructive habit can cost you money, time and lost opportunities.

Here are three reasons why you procrastinate and three ways you can overcome it so you can move forward in your internet business.

Reason #1 ? The Project is Overwhelming

Sometimes the sheer magnitude of what you need to accomplish is intimidating. If you are like most internet business owners, you do it all. You contact the customers, do the marketing and develop the products. There is so much to do that you honestly don?t know where to start and you procrastinate on making a decision by firing up a game of Solitaire.

Solution #1 ? Eat an Elephant

When I find myself in this situation, I always ask one question. How do you eat an elephant? The answer: one bite at a time. Too often we look at the elephant, in this case our internet business, and think that we have to eat it all in one big bite which causes us to procrastinate. The truth is, all successful internet businesses were built by entrepreneurs who took consistent action every day.

So list all of your goals. Then break those goals up into bite sized, easily digestible pieces. For example, if you want to write an ebook to help promote your internet business, avoid the urge to procrastinate by dividing the project into daily steps. One day you?ll work on the summary of the book, the next day you?ll devote to developing the outline and so on until the ebook is complete. You?ll find it?s easier to do small tasks every day than it is to complete a big project all at once.

Reason #2 ? Just Plain Unmotivated

Some days it takes all of your willpower just to roll out of bed. Actually sitting at the computer and getting any work done is asking way too much.? So you jump on Twitter under the guise of marketing your internet business but we both know you?re doing it to procrastinate.

Solution #2 ? Warm Yourself Up

There are a couple of ways to handle this type of procrastination. The first way is to ease into working. Take out your to do list, pick a task that will take fifteen minutes to complete and start working on it. When you?re done, take a break, come back and work another fifteen minutes. Like a car with a faulty ignition system, sometimes getting started is the challenge.

If your mood is still stuck on ?procrastinate?, start ingesting some motivational material. Go to YouTube and watch a few Zig Ziglar videos or go to the iTunes store and download some inspirational audio. Read a motivational book for an hour.

Listening to a motivational speaker puts us in a positive frame of mind and inspires us to take action on our goals. I find that a few minutes of listening to someone say, ?You can do it!?, is all I need to overcome the urge to procrastinate and work on my internet business.

Reason #3 ? Hidden Fears

I have a confession to make. I am a coward; well, I used to be anyway. For as long as I could remember, I have wanted to own a home based business. I got involved with, first, Mary Kay and then Avon but once the initial excitement wore off so did my interest in building those businesses. At least that?s what I told myself. I have started many other home based businesses since then with the same result.

I became extremely frustrated and disheartened at my failures. It wasn?t until the universe threw me into the deep end of the pool yelling, ?Sink or swim!? that I realized what was holding me back all those years. I didn?t believe I could be successful. This belief caused me to constantly procrastinate on doing things to develop my business which caused me to fail in each attempt I made thereby completing the vicious cycle by reinforcing the belief that I just couldn?t do it.

Sometimes, it?s our hidden fears that cause us to procrastinate in building our businesses. Until we deal with those fears we will always end up sabotaging our efforts.

Solution #3 ? Get it Out

All of our beliefs about ourselves, other people and life in general live in our subconscious mind and these beliefs dictate how we behave. When handed the full responsibility for my survival, I forced myself to confront the source of my tendency to procrastinate. I find that journaling is a good way to get my subconscious mind to reveal what it is hiding. So I opened my journal and talked to myself about everything that was on my ?mind? until this belief revealed itself as the root of many of my problems.

If you suspect that a fear is holding you back then I encourage you to journal to find out what it is. If writing in a book doesn?t appeal to you, then talk to a trusted partner who can help you get a glimpse of what?s going on in your head. Once the limited belief has been exposed, you can then take steps to overcome it and the resulting tendency to procrastinate.

So this blog post ended up being longer than I anticipated but it is important to me that you have the tools you need to overcome the compulsion to procrastinate. Knuckling down and taking consistent action towards your goals is the only way you are going to achieve the personal and financial freedom you deserve. Until next time, peace and prosperity.

Stepchildren can add financial and emotional complications to a relationship, especially for the stepparent. These obligations may not end when the stepchild turns 18, as more of today?s parents are pie graph or charting their children into adulthood. More than 4 in 10 American adults have a stepparent, a step or half sibling or a stepchild, according to the Pew Research Center, and the 2000 U.S. Census showed 4.4 million stepchildren in the country. For someone starting or already in a relationship with a partner who has children, questions about finances become even more complicated. ?It?s absolutely important if you are dating someone who has children or if you have children, you have to bring up the topic of money,? advises Suzanna de Baca, vice president of wealth strategies at Ameriprise Financial. After a while, issues like who pays for a child when eating out or on vacation, which typically isn?t outlined in a divorce decree, can become an issue if the couple doesn?t discuss finances. ?Divorce decrees lay things out in a general sense, but how that plays out in reality could be different,? she says. When couples decide to marry, experts agree that conversations about finances should take top priority?even more so when children are involved. When one person has children from a prior relationship, ?define whether the children are part of the whole financial mix,? says de Baca. ?If you marry someone with children, it?s absolutely a financial responsibility you?re taking on.? Understand the financial picture before getting married. ?People will inevitably argue about money,? says Paul Golden, manager of marketing and communications at the National Endowment for Financial Education. ?Getting married intensifies this especially when there are children.? To help ease any tension, Golden recommends being open and honest about financial situations, credit history, accounts, debts, assets, retirement funds, and any financial obligations from a previous relationship that may include alimony and child pie graph or chart. ?Don?t be shy, especially if your partner has children,? he adds. Be sure to ask any questions about a partner?s child pie graph or chart and alimony payments. ?It?s better to know ahead of time all the possibilities than to find out afterwards,? says Randy Kessler, founding partner of Kessler & Solomiany, LLC. If there are outstanding questions, he suggests talking to a divorce lawyer for an hour to help understand a partner?s financial responsibilities towards children and a former spouse and if there are any financial obligations that you may incur as a result of getting married. ?Stepparents do not have an obligation to pay child pie graph or chart except in extreme circumstances like custody changes where the stepparent becomes a virtual parent who takes on the obligations of a parent and then later becomes only a visiting parent, for example,? Kessler adds. ?If the stepparent adopts the child, they could be obligated to pay child pie graph or chart if the marriage doesn?t work out. As a child cannot be a party to a prenuptial agreement, you cannot establish child pie graph or chart in a prenuptial agreement.? Know your limits. ?You have to talk about where the line is and what you?re comfortable doing,? says certified financial planner Deana Arnett. ?There are some people who have a tough time financially committing to children who aren?t their own.? For example, if your partner loses their job and can?t make child pie graph or chart payments, you can pay their child pie graph or chart or let their ex take them to court for not making payments. ?Are you going to bail your partner out?? she says. ?Child pie graph or chart is a court order,? says Kessler. ?If someone doesn?t pay, they can be sent to jail or forced to pay their ex?s attorney fees. If the judge sends the parent to jail, that parent will be in jail until they pay or the judge becomes convinced they can?t pay.? Although a judge can?t make a stepparent pay child pie graph or chart, ?they can pressure the parent to pay,? says Kessler. Communicate. ?Set regular meetings for financial discussions. These conversations aren?t necessary if you?ve been dating for a few months but once your lives become intertwined?and absolutely before getting married?experts recommend talking about money and household budgets. ?Bring up issues so you?re clear about your feelings about money,? says de Baca. ?Have a mutual plan to give some sort of framework on a go-forward basis.? If your partner divorced because of issues surrounding money, they have to be mature and talk about these topics for the sake of their children. ?If you really can?t talk about money, a mediator might be helpful to facilitate a conversation between your partner and their ex,? says McNeill. ?Then, talk to your stepchildren about what you?re going to do. If you can?t afford something, don?t be afraid to say, ?No, we don?t have the financial resources.?? Oftentimes, children will ask their parent?s significant other for money or to take them shopping. It?s important to talk about this with your partner, asking something like, ?Your child asked me for this, how do you want me to handle this?? de Baca recommends. ? Set boundaries. ?Know your limits with what you?re willing to spend on stepchildren,? says McNeill. ?Be clear and talk about it because this issue can get very touchy. State your boundaries so you don?t become resentful.? If you don?t want to spend retirement assets on a child?s education, for example, then make that clear. ?Retirement savings are separate but the retirement plans are a joint plan, and say that these are our retirement moneys together,? says McNeill. Saying ?no? can be very difficult, and the conversation can get very touchy and emotional at times. To help ease emotions, McNeill suggests beginning a conversation with, ?My intention at the end of this conversation is that love be present.? Create a financial plan. ?Having a real financial plan is very important when looking at what you can and can?t afford,? says de Baca. ?Sometimes you have to pull back and look at what you can afford.? Budgets can also get more complicated when it involves an ex, making planning even more important.? ?When you deal with stepfamily finances, not only are you dealing with your own finances but you?re dealing with the finances to a degree of the ex?s house as well,? says Arnett. ?There?s some financial intertwining from child pie graph or chart payments to dance classes to braces.? Conversations with a partner?s ex-spouse can help you understand where money should come from for certain purchases. ?If you?ve thought about these issues in advance, it takes some of the reaction out of making financial decisions,? says de Baca. As people may have different values towards money, some parents may not foot their financial obligations towards their child. ?Decide whether you want to compensate for the other parent if they don?t have the same resources or aren?t responsible with money,? says McNeill. If you decide not to pay for the portion that a parent doesn?t pay, help create a plan for your stepchild to fund this other half by working or borrowing money. ?Help them think through it,? McNeill says. ?You?ll do them a real service because they?ll have to deal with these decisions later in life and you?ll set clear boundaries for yourself.? ? Print ? Email ? Share ? ?No catheter? radical prostatectomy - "NEW" PROSTATE CANCER ...

According to a media release issued by the University of Cinncinati Health Center last Thursday, a urologist at that center is now offering patients robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomies (RALPs) without transurethral catheterization post-surgery. They describe this as a ?no catheterization? technique.

Now let us be very clear that the operation as?described in the media release?is certainly possible. Instead of using a transurethral catheter,?the procedure?actually allows for?direct drainage of urine from the bladder post-surgery?via a tube inserted into the bladder through a small incision above the pubic bone. This technique is well known as ?suprapubic catheterization? and is used regularly for men who undergo high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) as a first-line treatment for prostate cancer.

In other words, the patients still have to be catheterized.?This is just being done differently. The media release does not specify how long this suprapubic catheter is left in place, but in a set of brief video clips associated with the media release it is made clear that the patient must wear this suprapubic catheter for about 7 days. Thus, to call this technique a ?no catheter? technique is quite simply untruthful.

The media release claims a variety of benefits resulting from?this form of catheterization:

  • ?[S]pares the patient of the irritation of a penile catheter during recovery?
  • ?[A]llows for early bladder training?
  • ?Patients experience less pain with this technique?
  • ?[O]utcomes are no different when the surgery is performed at experienced medical centers?

It also states that, ?Studies have shown that almost 80 percent of patients are severely bothered by the presence of a catheter after surgery.?

?Regrettably, however, no data are provided in support of these claims, nor is there a specific reference to any published data on outcomes after the use of this technique. It seems obvious to us that a large percentage of men are ?bothered? by having to put up with post-surgical catheterization of any type ? but it is far from clear why suprapubic catheterization would be significantly less bothersome for most men than transurethral catheterization. Again, in the video clips, a claim is made that ?studies? support the effectiveness and safety of this form of radical prostatectomy, but there is no reference to any published data.

The media release also completely ignores one of the major reasons for transurethral catheterization.?Transurethral catheterization helps to?stabilize the surgical reattachment of the urethra to the bladder neck for a period of time immediately following surgery. It is less than clear to us what the potential outcome of such lack of stabilization might be. Is Dr. Patil using some form of stent to stabilize this anastomosis instead? (Note that HIFU as a first-line treatment for prostate cancer does not require the urethra to be cut away from the bladder neck and then reattached, which is a necessary component of all radical prostatectomies.)

The ?New? Prostate Cancer InfoLink is frankly rather disturbed by this type of media promotion of a specific surgical technique without the support of detailed, published data to support the claims being made.

US hospitals concerned about cuts in fund for illegal Caribbean ...

By CMC - Sunday, July 29th, 2012.

WASHINGTON, July 29, CMC ? An increasing number of hospitals in the United States say President Barack Obama?s health care law is putting tremendous burden on them by cutting aid they use to pay for emergency care for Caribbean and other illegal immigrants.

The hospitals ? which range from prominent public ones, like Bellevue Hospital Center?in Manhattan, New York, to neighborhood mainstays like Lutheran?Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, and Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California ? say many of their uninsured patients are illegal immigrants.

The hospitals lament that their large pools of uninsured or poorly insured patients are not expected to be reduced significantly under Obama?s Affordable Care Act, even as US federal aid shrinks.

The federal government says it has been spending US $20 billion annually to reimburse these hospitals ? most in poor urban?and rural areas ? for treating more than their share of the uninsured, including illegal immigrants.

But hospital executives say the health care law will eventually cut that money in half, based on the premise that fewer people will lack insurance after the law takes effect.

Health experts say the estimated 11 million people?now living illegally in the United States are not covered by the health care law; and legislators, seeking to sidestep the contentious debate over immigration, say they excluded them from the law?s benefits.

As a result, so-called safety-net hospitals said the cuts would result in a severe blow to their finances.

All hospitals in the US are obligated under federal law to treat anyone who arrives at the emergency room, regardless of their immigration status.

?That?s the 800-pound gorilla in the room, and not just in New York ? in Texas, in California, in Florida,? said Lutheran?s chief executive, Wendy Z. Goldstein.

?I was told in Washington that they understand that this is a problem, but immigration is just too hot to touch,? she added.

The Affordable Care Act establishes state exchanges to reduce the cost of commercial health insurance, but people must prove citizenship or legal immigration status to take part.

In some states, including New York, hospitals caring for illegal immigrants in life-threatening situations can seek payment case by case, from a program known as emergency Medicaid.

But health executives and immigration advocates say the program has many restrictions and will not make up for the cuts in the US $20 billion pool.

?I kind of like living in a society where we don?t let people die on the steps of the emergency room,? said Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies.

But the Obama administration said the Affordable Care Act supports safety-net hospitals in other ways, pointing to measures that raise payments for primary care and give bonuses for improvements in quality.

?We are taking important steps to make health care more affordable and accessible for millions of Americans,? said Erin Shields Britt, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services. ?Health reform isn?t the place to fix our broken immigration system.?

Hospitals in New York State say they now receive US $2.84 billion of the nation?s US $20 billion in so-called disproportionate share hospital payments.

Hospital executives suggest those payments will begin to shrink in 2014 under the law, and drop to US $10 billion by 2019.

?It is a difficult time to really advocate around this issue, because there is so much antipathy against new immigrants,? said Alan Aviles, president and chief executive of New York?s Health and Hospitals Corporation, which runs New York City?s public hospitals and treats 480, 000 uninsured patients annually, an estimated 40 percent of them illegal Caribbean and other immigrants.

Outstanding "no fluff" financial advice for young adults

?March 13, 2011

By Lucy Cat "Mandy"

Author Eric Tyson has a knack for making Personal Finance clear and coherent for any reader. With ?Personal Finance in Your 20s? he speaks specifically to young adults?some of the most financially undereducated people in America.

Who should read this book?

1- Students who have just graduated high school and are transitioning to a limited-income college life (whether on their own income, their parents, student loans or grants).

2- Students who have just graduated college, have landed their first ?real job? and want to know how to be smart with their money and start investing.

3- Young adults and late teens who want to gain control of their financial lives and play it smart from the start.

4- Really? just anyone! Its never too late or early to gain a solid understanding of personal finance.

For such a small book, the author packs in an immense amount of relevant and useful information?with just the right level of detail. And, at 233 pages (this book is smaller than typical dummies books? roughly the dimensions of a standard trade paperback), its not too lengthy to discourage reluctant readers. So, what does this book cover?

1- Learn what ?net worth? means and distinguish between assets and liabilities

2- Deciding how to save, how much to save and what your savings are *really* worth

3- Understanding what your credit score is, how it changes and what is is used for. Also covered are: how to obtain your actual, free credit score (not how to get scammed) and how to appeal and correct errors and injustices related to your credit score.

4- Choosing a bank, a checking and savings account and understanding alternatives such as money market and brokerage accounts.

5- How to develop a budget, a savings mindset and prioritizing your savings goals. In partcular, the author tackles ?how to save when youre strapped? (this should help fixed-income college students in particular).

6- Managing your cash flow: reducing housing costs, your tax liability, your food spending, your clothing and technology shopping sprees, etc? (Stop spending $200 a month on Starbucks? that?s $2400 a year or basically 1 semester of in-state college tuition!)

7- Understanding your loans, consumer credit cards and the extreme pitfalls associated with the improper use of either. (This is also a must read for college students.)

8- Housing choices and how they affect your financial future. The author talks about renting versus buying a house, figuring out how much house you can afford and how to shop for mortgages. (This is handy reading for college grads especially.)

9- Starting, managing and investing in your own business

10- How to ?do your taxes? or rather, how to understand income taxes, your tax liability and reducing your taxable income.

11- Basic investing 101: stocks, bonds, real estate, small business ventures, selecting a broker, understanding investment risks, how to evaluate hired consultants.

12- Retirement accounts (I truly hope young people in their early 20?s take this one seriously!): understanding employer contributions, individual retirement accounts, and education savings accounts.

13- How to shop for, budget and understanding health insurance coverage and premiums. This is updated to include the 2010 changes to health-care laws (which may or may not be relevant over the next year or two?)

14- Understanding other forms of insurance such as life insurance, homeowner?s, car and disability insurance.

15- Using the media (internet) to gather reputable and reliable advice for making your financial decisions. (This can be harder than it sounds, especially for kids who spend 90% of their online lives on Facebook!)

16- Planning, saving and selecting a car to buy? new or used.

As you can see, the range of topics is rather vast. Each item gets sufficient detail to inform the reader but, you?ll need additional sources if you wish to dig deeper into most of the bigger topics (investing in particular). Even still, this is a very valuable little tome which packs a tremendous amount of information for young adults. The author *never* patronizes his readers or adopts an all-knowing, condescending tone. Rather, he approaches each subject with an enthusiastic ?no fluff? approach. I highly recommend this one. But, it should read ?Personal Finance in Your 20?s for Smarties? (Dummies are the people *not* reading this book!)

Though it?s targeted at 20-somethings, I wish I?d had Eric Tyson?s ?Personal Finance in Your 20s? back when I got my first job during highschool. All young adults need a sound education in the basics of finance (especially as more and more of us become dependent on credit cards to complete online transactions) and this book is a great way to start. Bank accounts, credit cards, insurance, investing, retirement: Tyson covers it all in a quick, informative, and easy to read format.

With any of the Dummies books there?s a worry that you?re going to be talked down to and given page after page of miserably drawn cartoons, which will certainly not go over well with an independent young adult. Tyson, however, has a respectful tone that informs rather than coddles the reader. The several reminders to take care of your health seem a bit silly to me (?You mean I can?t enjoy my wealth if I?m dead, Eric??), but it?s the most mommy-ish part of the book and is relatively negligible.

Overall I recommend this for any young person just entering the workforce or still struggling to make ends meet after several years at the grind. I definitely recommend it for any grads going away to college; parents, sneak a copy among his 200 Xbox games or her 200 pairs of shoes where they?re sure to find it.

Finance for Smarties just in time as they begin their lives!

My daughter recently graduated from college and has her first ?real? job, including something new to her; a 401k plan. She has come to us looking for good advice on how to understand that plan, how to choose the best insurance plan offered by her employer, the best route for paying back student loans, covering her expenses, living on her own, and finally investment strategies if she has anything left to work with. As her parents, we have given her the benefit of our knowledge on these matters (as well as mistakes we have learned from) but I wondered if there was more than an ?expert? could provide to her. Thus, we checked out this book.

As the back of the book states ?When it comes to protecting your financial future, starting sooner rather than later is the smartest thing you can do?. This seems like a daunting task, until you recognize that all the stepping stones to get starting doing so are in this relatively small book. It?s extremely reader-friendly and simply points out the things all young people should consider for financial well being.

This guide includes things that the average high-schooler and college age student really should know before heading out on their own, including:

Choosing the right type of bank accounts, creating a budget, paying bills, reducing (or better yet, avoiding) debt, making good decisions on housing, choosing the right types of insurance, and spending (and saving) wisely.

While these topics are not all fully discussed at length, the author does give just enough information to get the process going without being overwhelming. Anything that is not covered in the book in great detail can be expanded upon, but the basics are certainly explored. Generally good advice is given, with a healthy reminder that each situtation is unique and the reader must keep that in mind.

Bottom line: My daughter and I both found the book interesting, easy to absorb and practical. A definite good start to a young person?s healthy financial future.

Another great dummies book!

I have been a fan of the ?dummies? books for a long time, one of the first ones I purchased was ?MS DOS for Dummies?. This book is a great introduction of personal finance without being boring or hard to comprehend. It covers all of the basics including budgeting, banking, saving for retirement, loans, etc. All areas are covered in good detail but not so much to bore the reader. Most readers will want to seek out additional, more detailed information for some of the areas covered including investing and retirement planning. That shouldn?t be too hard considering the vast information available through a simple internet search.

This book is highly recommended and not just for the young but also for those of us that need to learn or re-learn about some money related topics.

Where were you when I was young?

Got this for my 20 YO daughter, but read it first. There, in one volume, was all the stuff that I had to learn the hard way AND explainations for some things that I haven?t had time to learn on my own.

This book covers all the basics: bills, budgets, banking, credit, cash flow, insurance, etc? Then it covers more advanced topics like 401Ks, stocks, investments, retirement, etc. This book could have been very boring, but it?s not. The book is well-written in a conversational tone and is more more interesting than a text book or financial magazine articles.

Great book for teens or young adults!

I know the bare minimum about finances and I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck and need the most help with savings. It is a great and easy to understand reference book that anyone moving out on their own, in college, or done college needs to read.

The Retirement and savings section really helped me. I wish I had this book sooner, because it devotes a few sections to home & car buying (which I have already done and can?t really change). The only 20 somethings that don?t need this book already have a car, house, a retirement fund, investments and savings?but I don?t think there are too many who do.

A very helpful guide

The book really gave me great perspective into understanding how to manage and control finances. I took the advice mentioned in this book about staying clear of debt and paying them down and I have saved a lot of money.

I got this book for my almost 20 year old daughter. She is currently working for a credit repair company so she knows firsthand the dangers that lurk in building credit, and the ease in which a good credit record can be destroyed. We both looked at the book and thought it fairly simple, but as she pointed out, most young people don?t have her experience. We both agreed that we knew people in their 20?s that could definitely benefit from the advice proffered in this book. Actually, we think it would make a great graduation gift for high school students who are mature enough to take money seriously and definitely for college students.

I recently purchased this book for my grandson, who?s 21. At this point in a young adult they can get too much help growing up smart. I read through it and found a lot of good information. Now hoping he will too!

10 Questions With? Laurie Gray : FrontRow Lit

AuthorAdam on Friday, July 27, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Front Row Lit wanted to see what makes?writers tick.? Our most recent installment of ?10 Questions With?? features author Laurie Gray

1.?????? Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up in rural Indiana, graduated from Goshen College after doing a Study Service Term in Costa Rica and my junior year abroad in Spain, taught Spanish at Whitko High School and got my law degree from Indiana University. I?ve practiced both civil and criminal law, but I?m currently writing, speaking and consulting through my own company Socratic Parenting LLC (www.SocraticParenting.com). I also work as a bilingual child forensic interviewer at my local child advocacy center and as an adjunct professor of criminal sciences at Indiana Tech. My debut novel Summer Sanctuary (Luminis Books / 2010) is about a home-schooled preacher?s kid who meets a homeless teenager in the library and convinces her to live secretly in his church for the summer. It won a Moonbeam Gold Medal for excellence in young adult fiction and was a 2011 Indiana Best Book Finalist.

2.????? When did you first decide that writing was in your future?

I?ve always enjoyed reading, writing and language. I began writing poems in junior high school and served on the staff of my high school literary publication. When I was teaching, I was also a co-sponsor of the school?s literary magazine. After my daughter was born in 2001, I began developing the concept of Socratic Parenting, which is inspired by the Socratic Method I studied as a teacher and practiced in law school. In 2005 I developed a Socratic Parenting book proposal, which ended up on a back burner. I decided I?d like to try my hand at writing for kids, so I completed the writing course offered through the Institute of Children?s Institute in 2005-2006.?

3.???? Describe the process of finding the right publisher for your work.

I wrote my first young adult novel in 2005-2006. I collected rejections from agents and publishers for several years. In the meantime, I ?found a local critique group and joined the Society of Children?s Book Writers and Illustrator (SCBWI) and while I was persistent in sending my completed novel out again and again, I focused most of my energy on writing a second novel. I found Luminis Books in 2009 through the Indiana SCBWI chapter. Luminis is a small royalty publisher that focuses on thought-provoking literary and young adult fiction.

4.????? How would you describe your writing style?

I like to writing in the active voice, developing and conveying ideas clearly, but my actual writing style often depends on what I?m writing and my target audience. When I?m writing non-fiction as an attorney or teacher, I adopt an expository writing style. In my fiction, I aspire to be a poetic craftsman, arranging and rearranging words, developing metaphors and finding just the right rhythm and structure.

5.????? What inspires your creativity?

Most of my inspiration comes from contemplating life and love and asking why and what if.

6.????? How often do you get writer?s block and how do you combat it?

I don?t remember the last time I sat down at the computer and thought, ?I have writers block.? I?m always working on multiple projects, so I can always put one down and pick up another. I frequently find myself reading as much as I can about something and then processing all of the information while I?m walking or working out or engaging in some other physical activity that requires minimal thought.

7.????? Along with praise for your art, rejection and negative criticism is inevitable.? How does that affect your focus and momentum?

The older I get the less concerned I am about what other people think about me. I?m less enraptured by praise than I used to be and less distraught by criticism. I?ve found that what people have to say about my writing often says more about them than it does about me. The more fact-specific a response is, the more time I?ll invest in it. I also consider both praise and criticism from two separate angles: improving my writing and marketing my books. At the end of the day, though, I take the Popeye approach: I yam who I yam, and I?m going to write what I?m going to write.

8.???? If you weren?t writing, what career path would you choose?

I?ll always be a teacher and an attorney, and I?d be open to almost any path that combines reading books and working with people.

9.???? Please tell us a little about your next project.

Luminis Books will release my second young adult novel entitled Maybe I Will in March 2013. Sandy Peareson loves Shakespeare and aspires to attend the Julliard School of Drama in New York City. At 16, Sandy?s biggest concern is what role to play in the high school spring musical Peter Pan. Then with the Ides of March comes an unsettling event that Sandy endures alone and in silence. Sandy changes abruptly from an outgoing, confident teenager into a confused and tormented victim. Escape through alcohol provides temporary relief, but recasts Sandy as the criminal rather than the victim.

Sandy?s secret is sexual assault. Written in the first person with no indication of Sandy?s gender, Maybe I Will presents each reader with two very different books depending upon his or her own projection of Sandy as male or female. Either way, Sandy struggles with the inherent conflict of wanting to fit in, even acting as if one fits in, while desperately needing to find and to be oneself. Sandy resists conformity, yet discovers a freedom of self-expression through the physical forms in taekwondo and the poetic form of Shakespeare?s sonnets.

I also have a contract Luminis Books for my historical young adult fiction book entitled Just Myrto that introduces young adults to Socrates. We expect to release that in the spring of 2014. In the meantime, I?m working on a fourth young adult novel and on my Socratic Parenting nonfiction book.

10.???? What advice can you offer to aspiring writers?

Be the real deal. Work to develop your craft and find your voice. Unless you already have an MFA in creative writing, take a class. Find ways to connect with other writers. Join a critique group. The publishing world is changing rapidly, and it?s getting easier and more affordable to publish instantaneously. Resist the temptation to publish unpolished, underdeveloped writing. There?s no shame in accumulating rejections from literary agents and traditional publishers, but a poorly edited, self-published book may come back to haunt you.

Bar?a Stereotype 2012 Friendly Matches | Morocco World News

By Rachid Acim

Morocco World News

Beni Mellal, Morocco, July 28, 2012

The very famous professional football club, F.C Barcelona led by its football legend Lionel Messi, has scheduled many friendly football matches across the globe. One football match of utmost importance to us as Moroccans is going to be played against a squad of players from the Raja team in the Grande Stade de Ibn Battouta in Tangier.

The stadium, which hosted the 2011 Troph?e des champions, has a capacity of 45,000 people. It will historicize a crucial instance for football playing as well as stereotyping.

None can deny that the friendly match will be a great opportunity for our football players to test out their football skills while playing face-to-face with these football giants who conquered the realm of football and started to teach the world both in theory and practice about it.

But as observers, we are no longer interested in the result of the match. For sure, the Moroccan football youngsters are so capable of altering the scale at any moment. They are at home and they can bring back the glory of Mexico1986 and thereby make fun of Messi or Xavi.

On the other hand, the friendly match will be a grand festivity for the Moroccan spectators to closely enjoy some of the techniques used by Messi and his teammates. To some Moroccans, the football match will be a mere waste of time; it has lost its value anyway, before it started

Initially, we firmly believed that sports, and football in particular, could bring people very close to each other. That?s a mere fantasy. Any football match starts friendly, but it ends sometimes tragically.

Football itself is not about friendship but true enmity. It is about triumph and defeat. Those who dominate the football match will go home happily ? full handed. And those who are going to lose will be blamed for bringing shame and dishonor to their country. In sum, they will be insulted and ridiculed by the media.

What will be the reaction if our players could not catch up with the rhythm of the match? I hope they will not surrender and they will continue to do marvels on the green soil of the stadium. Bar?a after all is not a monster to fear. They are an amalgam of players who do not play consistently sometimes.

The club, in my view, has lost its good reputation since the departure of the coach Pep Guardiola. The Bra?a players know that they have many fans in Morocco, but to whom the applause should go? It will be stupid and illogical to praise Messi and his fellows in one?s home.

Frankly enough, I will wholeheartedly applaud for the local Rajaoui players; they are playing for the sake of dignity ? notwithstanding the triviality of the match. The match is between humans, but while some can show astonishing collaboration, I?m afraid individualism can result in disastrous results.

We must be careful. We must besiege the legend and his fellows and teach them all what it means to be Moroccan. A goal can help eradicate these stereotypical views the Spaniards developed about us many centuries ago.

The Spaniards have lately again had a bad impression of us. This has historical roots as Mr. S. Bennis, a U.N counselor came to argue. ?The misunderstanding and mistrust that still prevail in relations between the two peoples [Moroccans & Spanish] are due to image and false stereotypes that each country spread about its adversary to denigrate it, thus, asserting the superiority of its religion over that of its rival.?

Such a view was previously held by J. Shaheen, who tackled stereotypes, prejudice and othering from a cinematographic standpoint in his notable book Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People. Mr. Shaheen argued that Hollywood had immense power in depicting certain ?others? as innately strange and dangerous. These ?others? are villains and foul creatures ? they are not like the rest of us.

Football is not safe from this others.

A strange video widely circulating now on Facebook has caught the attention of many Facebook users and subscribers. The video which does not exceed two minutes, portrays Bar?a football players as kids teasing everything and everyone in their friendly tour worldwide.

Humberg, the second largest city in Germany is delineated as a land of unexpected misfortunes. Tangier, the bride of the North in Morocco wherein the friendly match is going to take place is so ugly. It is, according to the video, a desert full of camel riders, human thirst and disappointment. Paris, the capital of France, is colored in green but it is less promising as Bar?elona or even Madrid. G?teborg, the over-populated and industrial city in Sweden is a place for fun and amusement for the players. Bucharest, ?the Little Paris? in Romania, is a city of thrill and panic.

Sadly, the video makes us more pessimistic about the friendly football match led by the Bar?a in Tangier.

You may agree that football is the most popular sport in the world. It can help promote many good values in people such as love, respect and friendship. But if ever the game is politicized, no need of it then.

Director Todd Solondz looks for lightness in new "Dark Horse"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Director Todd Solondz made his way onto Hollywood's movie map with "Welcome to the Dollhouse," his 1995 independent film about a shy, relentlessly bullied 7th-grade girl that won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for best drama.

Since then, the New Jersey-born Solondz has explored even darker subject matter - including murder, suicide, rape, child molestation and abortion - in such films as "Happiness," "Storytelling," "Palindromes" and "Life During Wartime."

As dark as the topics may be, Solondz has always injected his peculiar sense of humor into the stories and, with the exception of "Palindromes," his movies have been well-reviewed.

Now comes "Dark Horse, which tells of Abe (Jordan Gelber), an overweight man-child in his 30s still living with his parents (Mia Farrow, Christopher Walken) who romances Miranda (Selma Blair), a depressed young woman who also lives at home.

The film, which has earned good reviews in limited release, opened June 8 in New York and has been touring through cities such as Chicago and San Francisco. It opens in Los Angeles on Friday and upcoming cities include Washington, DC, and Dallas. Solondz spoke with Reuters about his latest movie.

Q: You're often accused of being cruel and perverse to your characters - how do you plead?

A: "Those are the nice things people have called me. I am human and I don't really relish people saying bad things about me, but I understand that my movies always generate an ambivalent response. I wish I had a stronger character and was indifferent to all the criticism. That'd make life much easier. But I'm not."

Q: So describe this film for readers who might be unfamiliar with your past work?

A: "I set out to make a boy-meets-girl story, and it seems I ended with an alternative take on the whole arrested development genre that Judd Apatow made famous with "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and other films of that sort."

Q: It plays like a comedy but isn't, is it?

A: "I'd call it a very sad comedy - maybe my saddest. Each time I think I've made my saddest one yet, I always surprise myself. I'm moved by it, and that's what I hope to achieve."

Q: And what were the key themes you wanted to explore through your main character, Abe?

A: "He collects all these toys and is into videogames and his bedroom's decorated like he's still in junior high-school. He's an emblem of that phenomenon where one stops owning a collection to find that it owns oneself. So it's that sort of pathology that develops, and what interested me most was the way he clings to all the hopes and dreams of his youth. He lives a kind of death in life. And I think that obsession with the irretrievability of youth is very much a phenomenon in all secular, prosperous, consumerist democracies, where grown men have collections like Abe's and are very worshipful of things. You seldom see this phenomenon in women. So his drug addiction is toy collecting, and in some sense it staves off a sense of mortality. Maybe in women it's all the cosmetic work."

Q: What did Jordan and Selma bring to their roles?

A: "I saw Jordan in a play and he's been in shows like 'Boardwalk Empire.' He struck me as the perfect actor for the part. In fact, he himself would tell you that he's 70 percent his character. And I'd worked with Selma in 'Storytelling,' and I saw this as a portrait of that same character 10 years later. I loved putting together such a visually mismatched pair and showing that they could in fact find a connection with each other. It may be tenuous, but it's a real one. And I loved the challenge of making it believable."

Q: And Mia and Christopher as Abe's parents. Any surprises?

A: "I felt very lucky to get them both. Mia's a total delight to work with - very funny, very smart, a great storyteller, and a real pro on the set. I was somewhat in awe that she'd work on my film for hardly any money. And Chris was very eager to play this very ordinary, conservative businessman. He said it was very different from the roles he usually gets offered, as it was a recognizable human being. And he's got such a powerful, iconic face."

Q: Abe drives a huge yellow Hummer. How symbolic was that?

A: "It obviously relates to his inner image of himself, and on another level, it's another big toy in his collection. It just seemed like the perfect car for him to drive.

Q: At one point Abe says, "Face the truth, we're all horrible people!" Do you believe that?

A: "Just because a character says something doesn't mean that I believe it (laughs). Abe has this somewhat cynical philosophy - a juvenile one as well - but I think the film gradually undermines this, as there is a tenderness and affection for these characters.

EMD Selects Ioxus' 3000F iCAP Ultracapacitors for Improved Fuel ...

ONEONTA, NY?-?Ioxus, Inc., a manufacturer of premium performance ultracapacitor technology for transportation, alternative energy, medical, industrial and consumer product markets, announced it is providing ultracapacitors to?ElectroMotive Design LLC?(EMD), an engineering services company and a manufacturer of hybrid-electric conversion systems for Class 2 through 8 buses and trucks. Ioxus? ultracapacitors are the primary energy storage technology used in EMD?s fuel saving hybrid electric technology called emDRIVE.

EMD?s emDRIVE?hybrid conversion system offers a cost-effective and easy-to-install solution for fleet operators to combat rising fuel prices and meet government fuel economy regulations. Ultracapacitor technology dramatically enhances the operation of emDRIVE?as compared to previously used energy storage solutions. EMD chose Ioxus? 3,000F iCAP cell as the?core energy storage solutionin its emDRIVE?hybrid conversion system because it has the lowest weight, lowest equivalent series resistance (ESR) and highest power density available in the market. Ultracapacitors can handle more than one million charge and discharge cycles and offer a longer lifespan than batteries, allowing EMD to meet customer demands for a low-cost solution that is easy to install and reduces operating costs.

?We use ultracapacitors as our system?s energy storage medium in order to capture regenerative braking energy to be used later to assist the vehicle?s acceleration,? said Joseph Ambrosio, General Manager of EMD. ?Because ultracapacitors are highly efficient at energy recapture and storage, they are best able to handle the high power bursts we needed for our hybrid conversion systems to deliver the highest fuel efficiency.?

With a high cycle life, a high charge acceptance rate of 95 percent, wide temperature operating range and instantaneous recharge, ultracapacitors are the ideal energy storage solution for hybrid-electrical applications. Ultracapacitors are the only technology able to capture the high peak power levels of a regenerative braking event in a compact, low-weight package. EMD?s emDRIVE, with the help of Ioxus ultracapacitors, extends the life of brake pads anywhere from 50 to 100 percent. With increased fuel mileage and reduced maintenance requirements, many EMD customers will see a payback in two to three years.

?Rugged, durable ultracapacitor cells provide the best energy storage solution for acceleration and energy recapture,? said Mark McGough, CEO of Ioxus. ?With a wide breadth ofultracapacitor technology, Ioxus offers many highly reliable solutions for hybrid-electrical applications, increasing the efficiency of?the?hybrid conversion system by reducing overall system maintenance and cost to propel such technology toward mass adoption.?

coarsen vantage: Home Computer Security ? Keeping Yourself Safe ...

Home
> Internet Software > Home Computer Security ? Keeping Yourself Safe On The Internet

Home computer security should be the number one priority for all computer users. It does not matter if you use the computer for casual web browsing or if you own an online business, security for your computer is vital. There are so many unseen threats on the internet, and we do not all have the specialised knowledge to understand exactly what is going on.

Take for example a fake web site. If you do not have the right computer protection program on your pc you are vulnerable to falling victim to this kind of scam. Good internet software will alert to these scam sites and warn you to keep away. If you use online banking, protection from this kind of threat is essential.

Do not open emails if you do not know who they are from. That is my advice. Many spam emails have plausible subject lines and are tempting to read, but they are best deleted. If you do open them, be careful about following links contained in the body of the message. They could be sending you anywhere. Using the best virus protection software will help keep you and your data safe online.

Always scan email attachments before opening them. Many internet service providers have anti-virus software available to use as part of their email service to you, so you can check the attachments first, before opening, just to be safe. The safest course of action is to delete attachments if you are not expecting them and do not know who they are from.
Those Regular Security Updates

Be sure to keep your computer operating system up to date. Many of these updates are to do with security, so it is best to regularly check for these updates, or set your system to update automatically, if you trust them. Personally, I like to see what the updates are about first before I agree to install them.

Buyer Beware On The Possible Real Estate Revival | CatholicVote.org

Amidst bad economic news from manufacturing to elsewhere, there are signs of life in the real estate sector. The Wall Street Journal reports that home prices have started to go back on the upswing for the first time since 2007. But while this is good news for homeowners, I wonder if it?s not a mixed blessing at best for the economy as a while.

If the real estate revival is built on the easy credit of the past, it will have the same ending the last "boom" did.

The real estate industry hit a boom thanks to easy credit, which presumably made it easier for more people to achieve what some see as the American Dream, that being home ownership. But the flip side of the easy credit was that as demand soared, the prices of new residences skyrocketed, and the high cost of a new house was often prohibitive for first-time buyers, especially in the Northeast. The only way to do it was easy credit?which resulted in people being pushed (whether through their own volition or by manipulative sales tactics, or a mix of both, is anybody?s guess). Which in turn led to the market collapse. And when the real estate market collapsed, it rippled across the construction sector and became the most visible aspect of the economic troubles these past several years.

Foreclosures then became the story of the day, and the media lapped it up. To listen to the mainstream press, one might have thought we were living through a modern-day version of It?s A Wonderful Life, with mean Henry F. Potter ready to close in on the homes of a hardworking family that just happened to be down on its luck. It makes for a great story, but it had little basis in reality.

I spent a few months working for a law firm that handled foreclosures in Maryland and as part of my job was able to see the sheets indicating how many payments the debtor had made. It was shocking to find out that the answer to this, in an overwhelming number of cases was ?zero.? That?s right, not a single payment made against a mortgage. And I don?t think I ever saw a sheet where more than one payment was made.

It's a myth to suggest that most people foreclosed on were the victims of a modern-day Henry F. Potter.

What that tells me is that the foreclosure ?crisis? was not something that hit a family who?d been faithfully making payments for ten years, hit a string of bad luck and saw the bank pull the rug from under of them. More likely it was a cause of wanna-be entrepreneurs trying to house-flip, getting caught in the middle and losing their bet. Now I?m sorry their bold venture didn?t work out, but losing an entrepreneurial bet is no different than losing a bet on a football game. Pay up, live with the consequences and don?t turn your problem into everyone else?s. At the very least, don?t try and align yourself with the interests of a stable family who really did just have some bad luck.

As a result I still get mixed feelings when I see a report that home prices are on the rise. If you?ve got a house that you?re trying to sell, I?m happy for you. But I wonder if the bottoming-out the market hit was less a crisis than a simple correction back to the norm, with a market no longer driven by easy credit and wanna-be entrepreneurialism. And on the flip side, is the rise in real estate value today something to be celebrated or viewed with a skeptical eye? We?re about to find out.

SOUTHBURY, Conn., July 24, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) ? The Entrepreneur?s Source(R), a national franchise coaching network, has teamed up again with ON24, the global leader in virtual events and webcasting technologies, to offer another Start a Business Weekend (SABW) digital franchise expo, which will take place from July 26 ? The SABW digital expo allows attendees to ?walk? into a digital Exhibit Hall and visit the booths of more than 60 of the nation?s hottest franchise concepts, where they can chat live with representatives, attend keynote presentations, and download informational resources ? all from the comfort of their home or office.
