Givenchy, Hermes and Celine get elegant

PARIS (AP) ? True style doesn't try too hard.

That was the statement at Paris Fashion Week, alarmingly simple, but proved in a number of ready-to-wear presentations Sunday which heralded a move towards clean, simplified elegance.

Celine designer Phoebe Philo ? at the top of her game ? produced a chic display, effortlessly.

Three years after the lauded Briton's Celine debut, she delivered a strong show, which evoked her boho-bourgeois style in soft silhouettes with subtle architecture.

Another of Paris' influential designers, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, presented a new vision of style Sunday.

Again, Tisci channeled a clean look, simplifying the house silhouette in a less elaborate yet sophisticated collection.

Hermes ? the house of the jet-setting fashion buyer ? served up the elegance in its usual cocktail of travel, silk, leather and exotic cultural references.

Summing up his show, the house's designer Christophe Lemaire said it represented "a clean, sharp, modernist traveler."

Monday's highly anticipated shows include Stella McCartney, Chloe ? and the hottest ticket of the week ? Hedi Slimane's debut outing as designer for the rebranded Saint Laurent.

___

CELINE

Spring is about gentle contradictions, not color, Phoebe Philo seemed to say: Shown through a muted palette of black, white, navy and gray.

The real point of the show was the gentle play on contrasting lines, then textures, then form.

Loosely hanging silhouettes ? often with attention to neck details in high necks, bands and twists ? came in column or boxy shapes, with a couple of black A-line tuxedo-dresses for good measure.

The gloss of sheeny silks whispered a contrast against matte fabric.

Philo has often been noted for her chic "utilitarian tailoring," which she delivers with uncanny ease.

Here we saw it used artistically in hemline frays which turned into tassels, and twisted fabric that wrapped round the back sewn crudely together in a lump.

It's a style that wouldn't look out of place on Juliette Binoche, for example, who accepted a best-actress award at Cannes in 2010 in custom Celine.

The house is right in fancying themselves as Paris calendar's arty side.

When fashion insiders asked to see the mandatory program notes, there were wry smiles as they were handed a text-free book of collage pictures.

___

GIVENCHY

Trend-setting designer Riccardo Tisci changed the direction of Givenchy's ready-to-wear Sunday.

He simplified the silhouette to a more flattened and spread out front-and-shoulder emphasis in 37 black, white and gray looks.

A strong voice in the fashion conversation, Tisci's tailoring influences designers far and wide.

Last spring, for instance, he brought back the peplum.

Now, hardly a collection goes by without one cropping up.

The wilder bondage-gear touches that added spice to last season's equestrian-inspired trip, were gone here, in a less elaborate display ? but which had its moments of clean elegance.

A great feature was the clean, descending ripples in many of the looks which are sure to spread into other collections like wildfire.

But for a designer who likes to live dangerously, this more saleable collection? though a departure from last season ? felt at times like he was playing-it-safe.

___

HERMES

The fashion crowd got their summer holidays early ? flown first class across a vibrant mix of Polynesian prints and color-rich baroque foulard motifs.

Several of the models carried hang luggage. The mascot of the house, after all, is an airborne messenger.

The looks stopped off at every fabric under the sun: in full grain leather woven in silk, washed silk twill, plunged lambskin, satin piping and lovely indigo denim linen.

Colors too, were diverse in cappuccino, terracotta, sulphur, emerald, cobalt and ?the palette's most beautiful ? celadon.

The flight this season stopped off at the Netherlands and Germany? with tinges of the geometry and graphics of 1930s.

"I'm a modernist at heart," Lemaire said following the show, hosted next to Paris' Tuileries gardens.

This idea was worked into the collection's best looks with a feel of famed Dutch painter Piet Mondrian ? who used geometric shapes and blocks of colors that could be seen in several of the final looks.

Printed geometric floaty silk blouses and slightly jarring assorted pants made bold statements.

They also featured the slight play on masculine styles that Lemaire likes to toy with periodically: A cotton wool cravate appeared on most of the looks as a man's tie, tucked into a hoop.

The result was pure luxury, air delivered as only Hermes can.

___

KENZO

Kenzo headed back to the Southeast Asian jungle Sunday in a vibrant, fun collection that picked up their last menswear theme: A rainforest trek.

After just one year at the helm, the hard work of designers Humberto Leon and Carol Lim has paid off: They've managed to re-stamp the brand with a cool, populist edge.

But they're serious about their work in other ways too: Fashion insiders had to live the catwalk theme ? literally ? by trekking to the far-flung venue, the Maison de Judo, on the Paris city limits.

In bold ? sometimes purposefully garish ? orange vermilions and greens, the collection threw up some great wide pants and boxy-shaped jackets as well as a lot of safari-style street wear.

Though some of the jungle printed ensembles looked overly busy ? a beautiful camouflage print made up for it with images of flowers that looked like leopard.

But there was art in the detail too, with the designers showing a flair for tailoring in great utilitarian features.

Israel disappointed about Argentina's talks with Iran

Israel said it was greatly disappointed by Argentina's decision to meet with Iran to discuss two 1990s bombings in Buenos Aires that targeted Jewish organizations.

According to Reuters, Argentine courts had accused Tehran of sponsoring the attacks, one of which killed 85 a Jewish community center, and the other that killed 29 at the city's Israeli Embassy. Argentina President?Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner ordered her Foreign Minister Hector Timerman to accept the request from Iran to discuss the incidents in New York this week, the first time the two countries will address the bombings directly.

More from GlobalPost:?Argentina and Iran to discuss 1990s Buenos Aires bombings

On Friday, the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires warned that Iran can't be trusted, and Jewish leaders in Argentina expressed "great disappointment" about the meeting, reported the Associated Press. Timerman then quickly met with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman to assure him that Argentina would not be fooled. Argentina "has always kept at the center of its decisions the victims and their families, seeking a court ruling that takes into account Argentina's legal system," he said, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Ties between Argentina and Iran have been at a standstill since authorities were able to secure Interpol arrest warrants for five Iranians and a Lebanese in 2007 in relation to the community center bombing, Reuters noted. Iran has denied having any link to both attacks.

Sweet Dog Nurses Kitten Back to Heath | Babble Pets

iStock 000014520803XSmall 300x204 Sweet Dog Takes In an Abandoned Kitten and Nurses It Back to Heath

not the actual dog & cat in the story, but they're cute too

There are sometimes I am so over the sad stories I hear in the news ? both human news and pet news. It seems to be all we hear lately and well, that can start breaking our hearts the more we hear them.

Then, once in a while I come across a story that just warms my heart. It stands out from the rest of the sad news and can remind me that the world is a super sweet place.

A story came out a few days ago from?Minnesota and it involves two of the cutest creatures on the planet ? a dog and a tiny kitten.

A woman named Pat Weber owns a barn in?Jordan, about 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis and was enjoying the day with her grandson on September 24th, 2012. He was playing in the barn when he found a tiny kitten ? only about 2 inches long.

Weber says the tiny kitten was ?ice cold? but after feeling it move, she wrapped it up in a warm towel and brought it inside. That?s when the story gets adorable (promise, this isn?t a sad story about a forgotten kitten).

Weber has a 4-year old dog named?Mittens (aaw!) and when she heard the tiny kitten start to meow, she was interested. The tiny kitten nuzzled into Mittens, who started to lick her, and the kitten started?suckling, nursing on Mittens who hasn?t had her own litter for 2 years.

It took about 3 days for Mittens to start to produce milk according to Pat and ever since, Mittens has been a loving adopted mother to the tiny grey kitten who has been named Bootsie.

To see the actual cat and dog in the story, head to abc local and check out the cute!

The home of suspected shooter Andrew J. Engeldinger, 36, of Minneapolis, is shown Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, in Minneapolis. (AP) ? The parents of a Minneapolis man who authorities say fatally shot five people at his workplace were so concerned about his growing paranoia two years ago that they enrolled in a course for families of the mentally ill.

A spokeswoman for the family of Andrew Engeldinger said Saturday that not long after Engeldinger's parents took the 12-week class, he cut off all contact with them. She says they continued to try contacting him, but were unsuccessful.

Engeldinger was fired Thursday before the rampage, after which police say he shot and killed himself.

Former employees and associates of Accent Signage Systems say the 36-year-old Engeldinger had recently become more erratic and belligerent.

He had worked there since the late 1990s, they said, and was once viewed as sharp, intelligent and private.

Cabrera or Trout for AL MVP?

Tigers star not a lock for award ? even if he's first to win Triple Crown since '67

OPINION

updated 9:08 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

Tony DeMarco

Bringing some perspective to the numbers, arguments and misconceptions in the Mike Trout-Miguel Cabrera American League MVP debate:

1) Despite what we're hearing from both extremes, this is not an easy call.

There are possible scenarios for the final week of the regular season that would leave logical arguments for either player as the winner.

What we have here are two players in the midst of seasons of great historical significance. Both also happen to play for similarly underachieving teams whose post-season fates won't be determined until the final days of the regular season, so there's no edge there ? yet.

Still, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was quoted in the Detroit Free Press last week as saying, 'it would blow my mind' if Cabrera isn't the winner.

"In this case, I'm not being partial,'' Leyland added. "I don't have to lobby. It's right there in front of everybody.''

And at the other end of the spectrum, the sabermetrics crowd paints a statistical argument that convincingly tilts the scale to Trout. To them, this is a no-brainer ? Triple Crown and playoff implications be damned.

But much like political debates these days, where the extreme edges see only one right way, the truth lies somewhere in the middle here. And the fact is, it's going to be very tough for either player to finish second.

You don't need sabermetrics to know Trout is the best true five-tool player in the game this season, the best we've seen since a young Ken Griffey Jr. The advantages he holds over Cabrera in defense and base-running are immense. But is that enough to overcome Cabrera's advantage in the power numbers?

2) Which brings us to this: Winning the Triple Crown does NOT guarantee an MVP award.

Not even close. In fact, history puts it as only a 60-40 proposition.

That's right, only six of the last 10 Triple Crown winners also were their league's MVP. (There was no MVP award to win for the first five Triple Crown winners).

The last three Triple Crown winners ? Carl Yastrzemski (1967), Frank Robinson (1966), Mickey Mantle (1956) ? also were AL MVPs. All three played for pennant winners, making the MVP vote an easy call. Robinson and Mantle got all the first-place votes; Yaz missed by one.

Then there's the curious case of Ted Williams, who didn't win an MVP in either of his Triple Crown seasons.

In 1947, the Sox finished 14 games behind the Yankees, who just so happened to get a 56-game hitting streak from Joe DiMaggio ? the MVP winner by one point. The 1942 AL MVP voting went further to support the notion that voters either didn't like Williams much, or really took seriously the idea of an MVP playing for a pennant winner.

Williams absolutely dominated all three Triple Crown categories, and was the clear Wins Above Replacement (WAR) leader. Yet the pennant-winning Yankees' Joe Gordon got 12 first-place votes to Williams' nine, and won the MVP election.

The other Triple Crown winners who weren't MVPs were Lou Gehrig in 1934 and Chuck Klein in 1933. The latter's MVP snub is easier to understand, as Klein's Phillies finished 60-92 while the pennant-winning Giants were led by MVP Carl Hubbell, who won 23 games and posted a 1.66 ERA.

But the 1934 AL MVP voting is among the most-curious ever, as Gehrig finished fifth despite the Triple Crown and league-leading 1.172 OPS and 10.1 WAR total. The winner: Mickey Cochrane, catcher for the pennant-winning Tigers, who hit .320 with two homers, 76 RBI, .840 OPS and 3.7 WAR total ? not even the best on his team behind Charlie Gehringer.

3. Speaking of WAR, this could be the MVP debate that puts the metric on the mainstream map to stay.

Mainly because the argument for Trout lies primarily in his huge lead in the category.

Simply put, WAR is the best measure we have of a player's total value ? with the bat, in the field and on the bases ? boiled down to an estimation of how many wins that player adds to his team's total above what a replacement player (or one with absolute minimum every-day production at that position) would provide.

If Trout wins the MVP, it could have the same long-term effect as did Felix Hernandez's win in the 2010 Cy Young Award voting despite a 13-12 record. And if Trout wins the MVP despite a Cabrera Triple Crown, then we really will have a seismic shift in voters' minds on how to best evaluate a player's ability and value.

Be sure that front offices are making huge financial decisions with the help of WAR and other advanced metrics ? even as they balance that with what is seen by scouts who have spent their whole adult lives watching the game, and opinions of the people who play and coach it.

But one problem the WAR statistic has in gaining further credibility is that it's calculated two different ways by the two primary sites tracking it ? Baseball-Reference.com and FanGraphs.com Uniformity would go a long way to increasing its perceived accuracy, it says here.

What does history say about Triple Crown winners and WAR totals? Curiously, every Triple Crown winner has lead the league in WAR, most by wide margins. However, Cabrera does not, and even trails teammate Justin Verlander and Robinson Cano in the Baseball-Reference.com rankings, far behind Trout.

Ultimately, 28 BBWAA voters ? two from each AL city ? will cast ballots before the start of the playoffs. And the Triple Crown race and postseason fates of both teams will be factors.

Remove those, and Trout's chances increase dramatically. But if the Tigers win the AL Central, the Angels can't sneak into a wild-card spot and Cabrera puts a Triple Crown atop his season (or maybe even misses by a homer), you can expect many voters to go Cabrera 1, Trout 2 ? no matter the Trout-was-robbed arguments you'll read.

Otherwise, the MVP should go to Trout.

Minister Ramsay's speaking notes: Sahtu Exploration Readiness ...

Sep 26 2012

(Check against delivery)

Mayor Johnson,?MLA Norman Yakeleya,?Chiefs, Presidents and Community leaders, ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to you this afternoon. In addition to my responsibilities as Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, I am also the Minister of Transportation.

So I would like to start with a story that has its basis ? not in oil and gas ? but in aviation.

It?s a story concerning the beginning of real air travel in the North. Specifically two planes ? both owned by Imperial Oil ? who took off from Edmonton in the fall of 1921 bound for Fort Norman (what we now know as Tulita).

They flew north ? stopping at all the main centres ? Peace River, Fort Vermillion, Hay River and Fort Providence? But when they touched down in Fort Simpson, that?s when the trouble began.
The first plane crashed on landing. The second crashed on take-off. Both ended up stuck on the ground with broken propellers. And that?s where they would have stayed until spring were it not for two carpenters from the Hudson Bay Company?s trading post in Fort Simpson who took up the challenge of fashioning a new prop made out of toboggan boards held together by moose glue.

Well, their home-made prop worked ? and that allowed Imperial Oil to get to Fort Norman and stake all of what we now recognize as one the richest and longest operating oil fields in Canada ? the Norman Wells Oil Field.

For those of you that thought that the Town of Norman Wells owed its existence to Imperial Oil, you?ll have to think again. If it hadn?t been for two carpenters employed by the Hudson Bay Company in Fort Simpson in 1921, we might not be here today!

I?m sure the details of this story have become a little hazy over time, but it is nevertheless a story that speaks to our famous northern ingenuity and our ability to adapt to and overcome challenges.

More importantly, it highlights one of the northern traits that we are all so proud of ? that Northerners, above all else, are a people who recognize and have always depended on our ability to work together.

Ladies and gentlemen, if there was ever a time to step up and embody that northern trait in the Sahtu, it would be now.

If the Canol Shale Oil play can be proven and advanced to production, the potential is immense. It?s the type of potential that we as a Government are continually seeking out, developing and trying to bring to fruition.

Potential ? that we can work to translate into jobs, investment, business growth, training opportunities, infrastructure development and growth for our communities and Aboriginal corporations.

Potential that could drive investment in another pipeline ? maybe two ? to transport both oil and gas to southern markets. Potential that could increase the feasibility of an all-weather road south from Norman Wells.

The prospect exists for this region to become one of the major economic drivers for the NWT for the next ten years.

The 17th Legislative Assembly vision, Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners, strives to maximize this kind of opportunity and potential for everyone who calls this territory their home.

It?s a reality that underpins our desire to finalize the devolution process ? once and for all ? so that the people of the NWT can benefit directly from the resource revenues it will generate and have a greater say in the decisions required to move it forward.

We were happy to have the leaders of the Sahtu re-engage directly in devolution negotiations in May. As my colleague Mr. Yakeleya noted at the time ? the best way to guide our future is to be at the table.

Acquiring the tools and resources we need to better manage our affairs will be mutually beneficial for everybody in the North. It will allow us to streamline and simplify our Government processes, increase investor confidence and ? in turn ? facilitate the investment that will generate jobs and responsible economic growth, while ensuring environmental stewardship remains paramount.

Our government has said from the beginning that we are open for business and welcome economic development, provided developments occur in a respectful, environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.

We are excited at the prospect of building a vibrant, multi-pronged economy that is environmentally responsible and inclusive of Aboriginal people. We have been actively partnering with Aboriginal governments and industry to create tangible opportunities for employment and skills development.

And we are trying to build a culture of collaboration with all of our partners and stakeholders so that together we can maximize the NWT?s potential on all fronts.

We are all here today to ensure that the Canol Shale Oil Play is understood and developed in a way that will become the new model for responsible and sustainable development, and be an economic legacy for the people of the Sahtu and Northwest Territories.

This exploration readiness session is an opportunity for planning and open discussion between industry, government, small business, community leaders and representatives of our Aboriginal organizations and corporations.

It is an opportunity to define a clear vision and understanding of our goal ? and a strong, unwavering and united commitment on which to make our next decisions.

Because in the face of potential like what exists in the Sahtu today, history has shown us that if we don?t make the decision, it will be made for us.

Last Saturday, the Washington based Food and Water Watch organization organized a protest against hydraulic fracturing in 150 cities across five continents. It gave at least one Canadian leader the occasion to say that she wants Canada to follow suit with those countries and jurisdictions that are introducing moratoriums on this type of development.

It?s a scenario that is eerily reminiscent of the recent lobbies against the Gateway pipeline project or the Alberta oil sands. A scenario that we are all too familiar with in the North? southern-based lobby efforts against sealing, trapping, wolf culls and polar bear hunts that grew exponentially until they were allowed to influence decisions concerning the future of our Northern economy.

Don?t get me wrong. I am not advocating development at all costs. But in this media driven environment, it is often the loud voices at the extremes that dominate debate. The voices in the sensible centre get drowned out. And all too often these are the voices of our own people.
The rich 100-year history of oil and gas development in this region has not only contributed to our Territory?s rich resource potential, it has become an essential part of the traditional knowledge and culture of the Dene and Metis people who live here.

They are our partners in the co-management of our natural resources.

In the Sahtu, our work is guided, in part, by the Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim ? which many of the leaders gathered here today worked so hard to shape and create.

Additionally, our government follows a formal Sustainable Development Policy that reflects our unique Northern traditions and priorities. Our approach allows us to draw on the best of both traditional and scientific knowledge to manage development and provide sound environmental monitoring and stewardship.

We recognize that the Sahtu land and its resources are a source of great potential wealth for the people of this region. But social development and economic development must go hand-in-hand. We must develop our economy if we are to develop socially and give our people the opportunity to achieve their aspirations and potential.

Not unlike flying a plane with a home-made propeller, the evolution of this region and the Northwest Territories will require a certain amount creativity and courage.

The idea behind this workshop actually came from those of you who live and work in Norman Wells and the other communities of the Sahtu ? and recognized that the increase in exploration activity could offer opportunities for businesses and individuals here.

Through our planning process, one thing has been clear. Residents of the Sahtu are ready to take the next step as active partners in the realization of this region?s great potential.

  • To collectively address and look beyond the immediate challenges?
  • To build on the history that is already here?
  • And to embrace the prosperous and sustainable future that is so close to being in our grasps?

We talk about the potential of the North. But potential is all we will have until we take action and realize it.

If we are going to move this project forward successfully, we are going to have to take an active role in shaping it. And, we are going to have to do it together.

We can begin this week. All the resources that we need to translate the potential of the Sahtu into real and tangible investment are assembled here today.

Industry can ensure that their potential partners and staff in this region and in the NWT are clear on what is required and what opportunities will be available. Individuals and local industry can align their capacity and skills to meet these opportunities, and government can ensure that processes are in place to ensure that this happens.

We all know that a fundamental element of a sound economy starts with healthy and productive people. I understand this was discussed passionately throughout yesterday?s session, as you focused on how Sahtu residents ? and in particular ? the region?s youth, can be active participants in this development activity.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment is committed to working with industry and the residents and communities of the Sahtu Region to ensure the highest level of cooperation, planning and communication possible.

We have refocused and renamed our Mackenzie Valley Petroleum Planning Office in Hay River to provide increased capacity in responding to oil and gas development in the NWT. One of the primary tasks of this office now is assist with GNWT response to the current Sahtu play.

Our regional staff are active participants on the Sahtu Regional Management Committee. Moreover, they are working closely with Sahtu businesses, land corporations and industry to help foster good working relationships and to advance exploration and development prospects at a sustainable and manageable pace.

Most importantly, we are working with industry representatives and our federal colleagues to promote an unbiased and informed understanding of shale oil development in our Assembly, our community leadership and our many stakeholders. Through workshops, information tours and publically available research, we are providing the residents of the Sahtu and the NWT with the opportunity to effectively engage in the debate and decision making about their future and the potential of shale oil development in the North.

This is a time of change in the NWT. The negotiation and settling of land claims and self-government agreements with Aboriginal peoples, the Government of Canada?s actions related to regulatory improvements, and the negotiation of the transfer of land and water responsibilities from Canada to the Government of the NWT are all occurring simultaneously. They are all necessary elements of our political coming of age.

The Canol Shale Oil development will be a trailblazing one for the NWT as we transition to increased responsibilities in relation to natural resources in our territory though Devolution.

It will be essential that we maintain a positive working relationship with Industry and amongst governments, communities, businesses and the residents of the Sahtu and affected Regions to ensure that we are positioned for a smooth transition to this broader role.

We are committed to doing this right and to ensuring that the citizens of the NWT ? and of the Sahtu in particular ? are positioned to play a major and growing role in the development of our Territory.

Thank you all for taking the time to attend today.

Oil extends losses as economy pessimism persists

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell below $91 a barrel Wednesday in Asia, tracking stock markets which dropped on renewed pessimism about the outlook for economic growth.

Benchmark crude was down 62 cents to $90.75 a barrel at midafternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 56 cents to settle at $91.37 a barrel Tuesday in New York.

Oil failed to get an enduring boost from an improvement in U.S. consumer confidence to its highest level since February. Markets were overshadowed by comments from Charles Plosser, president of the U.S. Federal Reserve's Philadelphia branch, indicating that the Fed's efforts to support the world's biggest economy would likely fall short of its goals.

The comments reinforced the current pessimism about growth prospects, and dragged down stocks on Wall Street and then Asia. Benchmark crude has fallen from near $100 since the middle of last month. Energy prices tend to fall when growth is slow because of lower demand.

The U.S. economy is growing slowly. There also are concerns that Europe's debt crisis will continue to weigh on the global economy. China's export-driven economy has cooled off, largely due to Europe's problems.

Brent crude was down 65 cents at $109.80 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Heating oil was down 1.2 cents at $3.095 a gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline gained 0.7 cent to $2.83.

? Natural gas gained 2.6 cents to $2.95 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Apple says iPhone 5 scratches are normal for aluminum products

Mitt Romney's recent slide in several polls, including those in the battleground states of Ohio, Virginia and Florida, is troubling enough for the GOP. But, now the Republican nominee appears to be trailing President Barack Obama among a traditionally conservative constituency: NASCAR fans. Obama leads Romney 49 to 42 percent among NASCAR enthusiasts, according to [...]

How Food And Clothing Size Labels Affect What We Eat And What We Wear

There's no industry standard size for food and drink portions, so it's hard to compare a Big Gulp with a McDonald's medium soda.

When you go into a restaurant, you probably give some thought to whether you're ordering a small, regular or large sandwich.

That makes sense. With widening waistlines across the land, many of us want to make a health-conscious choice. But are we really getting a small portion when we order a small sandwich?

Well, that depends.

University of Michigan marketing professor Aradhna Krishna has studied how labels impact how much we eat. In one experiment, she gave people cookies that were labeled either medium or large, and then measured how much they ate.

?

The catch? The cookies were identical in size.

What happened? You guessed it. People ate more cookies when they were labeled "medium." Rather than trust what their stomachs were telling them, in other words, people went by the label.

(Listen to the radio piece above for how the same phenomenon affects people who go clothes shopping and seek out smaller sizes.)

"Just because there's a different size label attached to the same actual quantity of food, people eat more. But also, [they] think they've not eaten as much," says Krishna.

Krishna said the psychological principle at work has big ramifications because a 32-ounce soda at McDonald's is called a large soda, but the same drink at Wendy's is called a medium. A small coffee is 10 ounces at Dunkin' Donuts and 12 ounces at Caribou Coffee. When you trust labels, you could end up eating and drinking a lot more than you thought. Check out some visuals over at fastfoodmarketing.org.

Most Americans, moreover, don't realize the "large" soda they order today is about six times as large as the same soda 60 years ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Across the U.S., again what has happened is that food sizes have become larger over time," says Krishna. "So, that same hamburger has become bigger, the french fries have become bigger, and again this is leading to obesity."

Restaurants today can label food and drink as they please. But given the power of labels in shaping behavior, Krishna said that standardizing portion sizes across restaurants could have a bigger impact on public health than New York City's controversial recent ban on all sodas larger than 16 ounces at restaurants and other eateries.

"We're not talking about restrictions in terms of freedom in any way," she said. "All I'm saying is that sizes should be made more uniform, and that will only help the consumer because you'll know what you're getting."

Sticking labels on menus isn't the only way to influence what people eat. As we've reported before, eating off a smaller plate can cause people to overestimate the serving size they've received ? and eat less. Drinking beer from a straight glass, rather than a curved one, makes people drink more slowly and better gauge how much they've had to drink.

Krishna said the phenomenon of labels' influencing consumer behavior isn't unique to food. So-called vanity sizing is rampant in the clothing industry. Marketers are relabeling large-size clothes as small to give customers the satisfaction of feeling that they still fit into small-size clothing.

"What used to be a size 8 in the 1950s has become a size 4 in the 1970s and a zero in 2006," Krishna said.

In another study, Krishna and her colleagues found that vanity sizing improved people's body image. Labels shape our experiences in both positive and negative ways.

Referring to different bust sizes among women in Asian countries and in the United States, Krishna argued that people often don't have control over their body size and shouldn't need to feel blame or shame for not conforming to society's ideals. "It's not a question of being lied to," she said. "It's a question of do you want to be lied to."

International Law Reporter: Abels: Prisoners of the International ...

Denis Abels (Univ. of Amsterdam - Law) has published Prisoners of the International Community: The Legal Position of Persons Detained at International Criminal Tribunals (T.M.C. Asser Press 2012). Here's the abstract:

This book addresses a specific aspect of international criminal law. It describes the legal position and conditions of persons detained under the jurisdiction of international criminal tribunals, particularly as regards their internal legal position, their rights and duties inside the remand facility. Central to the book is the understanding that the circumstances surrounding these persons? detention are different from a domestic context.

The author?s primary aim is to disclose the law of detention of international criminal tribunals. The book sets out the applicable law, including the law?s underlying principles, and focuses on a number of specific procedural and substantive legal issues. As to procedural issues, it examines the available disciplinary and complaints procedures as well as procedures applicable to the designation of States for the enforcement of the tribunals? sentences. In respect of substantive law, it focuses on the detainees? right to contact with the outside world, including contact with their relatives, with their lawyers and with the media. The book further examines whether the positive law corresponds to the relevant international penal standards and human rights law.

As an outcome of immediate exchanges (interviews) between the author and the authorities involved, the author provides a substantial clarification and critical assessment of the current issues and paradoxes of the domain in question.

Sofia Vergara and Heidi Klum ramped up the sizzle Sunday night on the Emmy Awards red carpet that already had TV's biggest stars talking about just how hot they were because of the sweltering temperatures in Los Angeles.

Vergara wore a teal-colored gown by Zuhair Murad with beads all over and a cutout reverse halter neckline, and Klum chose a seafoam-colored gown by Alexandre Vauthier with plunging Vs from every angle on the top, super-high slits and not much left in the middle.

They helped fuel the trend toward bright, bold color that was also worn by pregnant Claire Danes in strapless daffodil-yellow Lanvin, Julianne Moore in a long-sleeve, stretchy gown and Nicole Kidman in a blue-on-white-beaded gown. All brought bonafide fashion credibility to the Nokia Theatre, but they weren't necessarily the favorites.

Hayden Panettiere plucked her sari-style Marchesa straight from the runway, and Gennifer Goodwin's flame-red-on-sheer-champagne strapless gown by Monique Lhuillier announced there's a new generation of style stars to reckon with.

Goodwin and Klum were early favorites of Louise Roe, Glamour editor-at-large and "Fashion Star" host. She wasn't crazy about Elisabeth Moss' printed, peplumed Dolce & Gabbana gown, which she said had a little too much "fussy detail."

And, Roe said, Emily VanCamp could have gone edgier than her still-lovely J. Mendel gown with pleats and hints of sexy sheer fabric. "She's young and has a killer body, she could have played around a bit more."

Zooey Deschanel had a manicure with little TV sets on her thumbnails ? perhaps the kind of thing "E!" had in mind for its mani-cam that had stars walking their fingers down a tiny red carpet.

Celebrities build their fashion reputation largely from the red carpet, Lhuillier said, and they'll affect trends for color, silhouette and embellishments.

Lhuillier said Emmy gowns were already in the works earlier this month when she presented her most recent catwalk collection ? one in which she declared "the ballgown is gone." Instead, she focused her full-length dresses in mermaid and other sleeker hemlines.

Not everyone watching TV will need a gown in the coming weeks or months, but when they do, they'll often turn to the brands they hear about at the Emmys, Oscars or Grammys, Lhuillier said. "That's what a red carpet does for a company like mine."

There's always someone who takes the high-fashion risk on the Emmy red carpet. It was Gwyneth Paltrow and her belly-baring, metallic lace number last year. It wasn't a critical favorite, but now ? in retrospect ? it seemed like the spark for many of the current runway trends.
