30 Healthy Breakfast Snacks for Mornings on the Run

When it comes to breakfast, the options are endless. Pancakes or waffles? Bacon and eggs? Muffin, followed by a pastry? So why limit chowing down on delicious breakfast foods to the morning hours? Here are 30 healthier snack options to keep filling those breakfast food cravings all month long.

Better Breakfast Snacks

1. Pumpkin and Granola Parfait:?This one?s perfect to try out as fall sets in. In your favorite small Tupperware container (with a reliable lid!), top plain Greek yogurt with canned pumpkin puree and a handful of granola, then sprinkle with cinnamon. The best part? Pumpkin is a bonafide superfood rich in beta carotene, which is essential for eye health.

2. Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie:?Smoothies are a perfect on-the-go snack any time of day. Blend 1 frozen banana, 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter, 1 cup soy or almond milk (which keep longer out of the fridge than regular milk), and a few ice cubes. (Add a scoop of your favorite chocolate or vanilla protein for an extra protein boost.) If this is a morning snack, keep it in a tight-sealing container and throw it in a gym or work bag. For an afternoon boost, prep it the night before and freeze, remove in the morning, and it will be thawed and ready to enjoy after lunch.

3. Zapped Scrambled Eggs with Veggies:?Yes, it?s possible to make really good scrambled eggs in the microwave. And it?s easy! Beat 2 eggs, throw in a microwave-safe container, add 1 handful of your favorite veggies (cherry tomatoes and spinach leaves work well), and a sprinkle of cheese. Zap the mixture for 30 seconds, stir, and cook another 30 seconds, or until eggs are solid. Throw a top on the container to eat later, or store the raw mixture in a fridge until ready to heat and eat.

4. Breakfast Burrito:?Who doesn?t love a burrito? Breakfast burritos are a great, easy snack to keep on hand. Scramble 2 egg whites, ? cup black beans, 2 tablespoons salsa, and 2 tablespoons shredded cheese, and wrap in 1 small whole-wheat tortilla. Make a bunch, wrap in foil, and keep in the freezer for whenever the craving hits. Protein from the eggs and black beans keep you fuller longer, and the spicy salsa keeps things interesting. Try assembling and wrapping each half separately for more snack-friendly portions.

5. Healthy Morning Glory Muffins:?An oat-based muffin packed with healthy carrots and zucchini, lightly sweetened with raisins and just a pinch of sugar makes a perfect breakfast or snack. Use a mini-muffin tin for smaller portions, and eliminate or cut back on the brown sugar or choose a healthier substitute to cut back on sugar.

Peach Yogurt Parfait

6.?Fruit and Yogurt Parfait:?One of the easiest, healthiest, and tastiest snacks (or breakfasts) out there is a classic fruit and yogurt parfait. The best part? It can really be made with any toppings you like. Try choosing fruits that are in season locally for the most flavorful options (try our?stone fruit salad?for summer, and opt for?apples?come fall).

7. Breakfast Quinoa Bites:?Here?s a new way to enjoy quinoa ? make mini quinoa breakfast quiches! In a medium bowl, combine 2 cups cooked quinoa, 2 eggs, 1 cup your favorite veggies (spinach or zucchini work well), 1 cup shredded cheese, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Portion into a lightly-greased mini muffin tin, and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. These are easy to bring along and delicious to enjoy warm or cold.

8. Fruit and Yogurt Smoothie:?Here?s a simple and delicious smoothie recipe for the morning rush. Blend 1 cup plain Greek yogurt with 1 cup frozen fruit (banana and berries work very well) with ? cup liquid (milk, juice, coconut water ? whatever you like). Freeze overnight and thaw throughout the day to enjoy in the afternoon, or blend up in the morning.

9. Leftovers n? Eggs:?Stuck with last night?s leftovers? Place a scoop of leftover roasted veggies, potatoes, or meat in a container, top with a cracked egg, and heat in the microwave until the egg white is cooked through, 30 to 45 seconds. (Or?prep in the oven.) Feeling fancy? Sprinkle with some freshly grated parmesan cheese.

10. Egg Muffins:?Finally, a muffin without all the carbs. Plus, these guys are simple to make. Beat 10 eggs, ? cup chopped onion, 3 handfuls of spinach, 1 shredded zucchini, ? a bell pepper (chopped), 4 slices cooked bacon or ham, chopped, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Divide egg mixture evenly in a lightly-greased muffin tin, and bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees. Zap it for a few seconds in the microwave before serving.

11. Fruity Breakfast Quinoa:?Cooking quinoa in milk (cow, soy, or almond) and adding some sweet spices and fruit makes for a great substitute for classic hot breakfast cereals. Plus, it?s high in protein and essential amino acids like lysine, which is essential for tissue growth and repair. Simply cook quinoa according to package instructions, but substitute milk for water, and add some cinnamon or nutmeg instead of salt and pepper. Top with fresh berries and chopped roasted nuts.

Strawberry Waffle

12. Waffle PBJ-Wich:?Try this sweet take on a classic breakfast sandwich the next time eating on the go. Prepare 1 whole-grain toaster waffle and slice in half. Spread with 2 tablespoons nut butter and layer 2-3 sliced strawberries on top in place of the traditional jelly (to cut down on sugar).

13. Zucchini Bread Oatmeal:?Take a classic baked loaf and make it into oatmeal with this recipe! Adding shredded zucchini to oatmeal is a great way to fit in an extra serving of veggies. Throw on a handful of toasted walnuts or pecans for some added crunch.

14. Quinoa Fruit Salad:?Spice up a plain old fruit cup with a scoop of superfood quinoa. Toss the whole shebang around until the quinoa is evenly distributed through the fruit. Add a scoop of plain yogurt and a drizzle of honey for a little extra body.

15. Oatmeal Squares:?Oatmeal is a great option for a hearty snack or breakfast, but what?s the best way to make it into a more convenient and portable snack? Bake it into squares!

16. Ricotta and Tomato Breakfast Sandwich:?Here?s a healthier take on the classic breakfast sandwich: Take 2 slices of a hearty whole-grain bread (extra points for a fresh-baked variety). Spread each slice with 1 tablespoon ricotta cheese and sprinkle with kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste. Add 1-2 hearty slices of fresh beefsteak tomato (blotted with paper towel to remove excess liquid) and enjoy.

17. Savory Oatmeal with an Egg:?Try taking oatmeal to a whole new level by making it savory. Prepare as usual with milk or water, but add a pinch of salt and pepper instead of any cinnamon or sugar, and top with an over-easy or poached egg. Sprinkle with a little cheese for an extra yummy kick.

Zucchini Muffins

18. Zucchini Muffins:?Any way that fits a serving of veggies into a delicious baked good is a winner in my book. These?zucchini and banana muffins with flaxseed?fit three healthier options into one easy-to-tote package.

19. Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies:?Cookies, for breakfast? Yes please! While Oreos or Chips Ahoy may not make a balanced breakfast, a homemade cookie made of banana, peanut butter, protein powder, and oats is a wholesome choice. Plus, you can pick and choose what you like to mix ? go for almond butter and raisins in one batch, or peanut butter chocolate chip in another.

20. Egg and Cheese Cups:?Fried eggs are great, but what about baking a whole egg with veggies and cheese and skipping the added oil? Try making a pan of these egg and cheese cups at the beginning of the week and bringing one along each day. (Pro Tip: If you use the individual silicone muffin molds, it makes the egg cups even more portable for on-the-go snacking.)

21. Homemade Instant Oatmeal:?For anyone with a microwave or hot water at their disposal, these customized instant oatmeal packets are fantastic to have on hand. Instead of purchasing pre-made oatmeal packets, assemble your own in ziplock baggies using whole rolled oats, cinnamon, and mix-ins like raisins and nuts.

22. Overnight Oats:?This is the ultimate lazy-person breakfast. The night before, combine ? cup milk, 1/3 cup rolled oats, ? a banana (mashed), ? cup chopped nuts, and a sprinkle of cinnamon in sealed Tupperware container. By morning, you?ll have delicious cold overnight oats! These can also be heated in the microwave for 1-2 minutes if in the mood for something warm.

23. Frozen Nutty Banana:?Say banan-YEAH to this healthy snack. Cut 1 firm (but ripe) banana in half and un-peal. Arrange on a small baking sheet or freezer-safe plate, and spread each half with 1 tablespoon almond butter evenly (on the sides not touching the plate). Here?s the fun part: Stick whatever toppings you like on top of the almond butter ? our favorites are granola, chia seeds, or flax seeds and cinnamon. Insert a popsicle stick or skewer into the cut end of each half, and freeze until solid (at least 2-3 hours).

Breakfast Quinoa

24. Chocolate Banana Breakfast Quinoa:?Here?s one healthy way to have?chocolate for breakfast: a bowlful of quinoa makes for a protein-rich filling breakfast, and the banana even adds a serving of fruit.

25. Fruit Soup:?There are just two ingredients in this tasty, cool snack: Cold fresh fruit, and cold milk. Chop 1 cup of fruit of your choosing (peaches, plums, berries, and mango are delicious!) and combine in a container with ?-1 cup milk of choice. Keep chilled until ready to enjoy.

26. Apple Surprise:?This is a perfect pick for apple season, Cut 1 apple in half and remove the core (plus a bit of the extra flesh around the core). Drop 1 tablespoon nut butter between the two holes, and sprinkle in 1 tablespoon granola. Wrap up the whole apple in plastic wrap or foil to save for later, or enjoy as is bite-by-bite.

27. Egg White Sandwich:?Who doesn?t love a classic egg sandwich? Try giving it an extra healthy twist. Microwave 2 egg whites along with 1 handful spinach and a sprinkle of salt for 30-45 seconds. Place in a whole wheat English muffin or sandwich thin with 1 slice of cheddar cheese (optional). Wrap in foil so the cheese melts evenly, and enjoy whenever the craving hits!

28. PBB&C:?Say what? A PBB&C is a great twist on the classic PB&J ? peanut butter, banana, and chia. Try adding this superfood twist to the classic PB sandwich with ? a banana (sliced) and a sprinkle of chia, which is packed with vitamins and minerals (like six times more calcium than milk!).

29. Berries and Oats Microwave Muffin:?Muffins from the microwave? Yep, it?s possible! Add 1 cup quick oats, 1 egg, a handful of berries, and a sprinkling of brown sugar to a mug and mix until evenly combined. Microwave on high for 1 minute, remove to take a look, and keep cooking for 30 seconds at a time until the muffin looks firm.

30. Strawberry Banana Quinoa Muffins:?By this point, I think the Greatist team believes quinoa makes anything better. So, muffins? It?s a no brainer. Try these strawberry quinoa muffins for an easily-packed snack or breakfast (or after lunch treat). Fruit + Quinoa + Oven = DELICIOUS.?

Birmingham mosquito control - Tips for Getting Rid of Pests

Like humans, pests also need nutrients, water, and a protected habitat to survive. The best way to pest-proof your home is to eliminate such sources from areas that pests can easily reach. This method, known as exclusion, is known by all pest control companies to be the best option for getting rid of all types of pests in your home.

To get your home free of pests, start by inspecting the outside. Garbage, leaves, grass, sticks, and other debris need to be removed from your porch and yard. Large trees and bushes should be routinely trimmed, especially if they're touching or near your home. If you have dogs, cats, or birds, make sure that their living habitats are also regularly cleaned, as their food and feces is an attraction for pests.

Next, check all of the water sources in your home including; sinks, drainage systems, toilets, and hose attachments. There shouldn't be any leaks, as pests such as mosquitoes can reproduce in puddles and other places where water is enclosed. If there are places in which the water cannot be removed or cleaned, it is recommended that you obtain mosquito control dunks. These prevent mosquitoes from reproducing and are entirely safe to use in your home.

As small as a crack or hole may seem, these should always be considered as an opportunity for pests to invade. Cockroaches, mice, ants, and termites are flexible and small, which makes it easy for them to fit into the smallest opening. Examine your home (inside and out) for any holes or cracks and repair the damage immediately.

Lastly, check inside of your home for food that is not put away. Even the tiniest crumbs can attract pests. Make it a daily routine to clean up right away after eating and do not allow your children to eat anywhere but the dining room or kitchen. This will minimize the amount of food or crumbs that fall on the floor, furniture, beds, etc.

When looking for the best pest control treatment, it is important to do your research. Why? Because sometimes using sprays or other first-line products only makes the problem worse. For example, an ant infestation will usually become bigger with sprays because only the ants that were sprayed will die. Meanwhile, the queen will keep on reproducing in the nest.

You can also avoid a pest invasion by using a preventative treatment around your home. This can be done by a professional or you can apply the treatment on your own and save some money. The products come in sprays or even granules, but it is up to you to determine which is the best option. If you have pets or children, it is extremely important to make sure that the product is not toxic; otherwise, you will have to make the treated area off-limits at all times.

If in doubt, hiring a pest control company is your best bet. They are highly trained professionals who know what they're doing and can answer any questions you may have.

BRACAnalysis helps women with increased cancer risk avoid cancer

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Stacy Chesser visits her gynecologist, Dr. Thomas Ray, on a regular basis.?? Chesser is the middle daughter in her family. Her sister, Kimberly Vernetti, made a disturbing discovery that dealt with family health history.?

"Kimberly had a knot on her breast, came into Dr. Ray. Two days later she got the results back that she had cancer," said Chesser.

That diagnosis shook the family to the core because breast cancer runs in the family. Vernetti's oncologist recommended a BRAC test for her, her sisters and mother.?

Dr. Ray explained what BRACAnalysis is.??

"The?BRACAnalysis is a test that screens for the?BRCA one and two gene. Essentially detects hereditary breast and ovarian cancers," said Ray.

He is very specific about what the test does and doesn't do.?

"It does not indicate that there is current cancer. But it does indicate that they may be susceptible at a higher risk than the general population over their lifetime," added Ray.

So who should take it??

"This test would be ideal for anyone who has a family history of ovarian cancer or breast cancer," he said.

Chesser was the first to schedule the test and got the results two weeks later.??

"He explained to me that?I came back positive for both breast and ovarian gene and with that he gave me an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer by the time?I was 50," she said.

Once the test results come back and if they are positive, the patient has a lot to think about. A very aggressive form of treatment could be surgery. Conservative treatments may involved medications.?

"I was through having my children and so?I went ahead and proceeded in three weeks with a complete hysterectomy. During this time, I've already been refereed over to a physician in Huntsville to where?I could talk to him about whether?I wanted to proceed with a double mastectomy," said Chesser.

Chesser's older sister tested negative, but their mom tested positive and also had both surgeries.

She said the?BRAC test is a blessing.?

"Mastectomy is a scary word. It scares everyone. But it's just body parts. You're still yourself. In hindsight, I've come out better," she said.

And now she's spreading the word so more women can try to avoid these types of cancer.

Positive depictions challenge negative stereotypes

Washington, DC (August 27, 2012) Men and women are less likely to experience negative effects to sexual violent media when watching a positive portrayal of a strong female character, even when that character is a victim of sexual violence.

Christopher Ferguson, Assistant Professor at Texas A&M International University, surveyed 150 university students in a controlled environment in a recent study published in the Journal of Communication. Each participant screened a variety of TV shows that portrayed women in different lights when it came to sexual violence. The results showed that men and women had less anxiety and negative reactions when viewing television shows that depicted a strong female character rather than a submissive one.

Past research has been inconsistent regarding the effects of sexually violent media on viewer's hostile attitudes toward women. Much of the previous literature has conflated possible variables such as sexually violent content with depictions of women as subservient

The submissive characters often reflect a negative gender bias that women and men find distasteful. This outweighed the sexual violence itself, giving credence to what Ferguson calls the "Buffy Effect"named after the popular television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its strong lead female character.

"Although sexual and violent content tends to get a lot of attention, I was surprised by how little impact such content had on attitudes toward women. Instead it seems to be portrayals of women themselves, positive or negative that have the most impact, irrespective of objectionable content. In focusing so much on violence and sex, we may have been focusing on the wrong things," Ferguson said.

"While it is commonly assumed that viewing sexually violent TV involving women causes men to think negatively of women, the results of this carefully designed study demonstrate that they do so only when women are portrayed as weak or submissive," added Journal of Communication editor and University of Washington Professor Malcolm Parks. "Positive depictions of women challenge negative stereotypes even when the content includes sexuality and violence. In this way Ferguson reminds us that viewers often process popular media portrayals in more subtle ways than critics of all political stripes give them credit for."

Survey: German consumer confidence remains stable

BERLIN (AP) ? A survey has found that consumer confidence in Germany remains stable despite ever-increasing worries that the country's economy, Europe's biggest, will suffer from the debt crisis weighing on many other European countries.

The GfK research institute said Tuesday that its forward-looking consumer confidence indicator for September stands at 5.9 points ? unchanged from the August reading.

The group says that consumers' economic expectations fell significantly for the third month in a row, but their income expectations and willingness to buy were only slightly lower. It says the overall indicator was propped up by a decline in consumers' inclination to save.

Germany's economy has been doing better than the 17-nation eurozone as a whole but there are increasing signs it isn't immune from the crisis, including falling business confidence.

Light from self-luminous tablet computers can affect evening melatonin, delaying sleep

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shows that a two-hour exposure to electronic devices with self-luminous "backlit" displays causes melatonin suppression, which might lead to delayed bedtimes, especially in teens.

The research team, led by Mariana Figueiro, associate professor at Rensselaer and director of the LRC's Light and Health Program, tested the effects of self-luminous tablets on melatonin suppression. In order to simulate typical usage of these devices, 13 individuals used self-luminous tablets to read, play games, and watch movies.

"Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 percent. Stimulating the human circadian system to this level may affect sleep in those using the devices prior to bedtime," said Figueiro.

The actual melatonin suppression values after 60 minutes were very similar to those estimated using a predictive model of human circadian phototransduction for one-hour light exposures. "Based on these results, display manufacturers can use our model to determine how their products could affect circadian system regulation," said Figueiro.

The results of this study, together with the LRC predictive model of human circadian phototransduction, could urge manufacturers to design more "circadian-friendly" electronic devices that could either increase or decrease circadian stimulation depending on the time of day -- reducing circadian stimulation in the evening for a better night's sleep, and increasing in the morning to encourage alertness. In the future, manufacturers might be able to use data and predictive models to design tablets for tailored daytime light exposures that minimize symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, and sleep disorders in seniors. Individuals would be able to receive light treatments while playing games or watching movies, making light therapy much more enjoyable than just sitting in front of a light box.

Along with Figueiro, co-authors of the study are LRC Director and Professor Mark S. Rea, LRC Research Specialist Brittany Wood, and LRC Research Nurse Barbara Plitnick.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland at night and under conditions of darkness in both diurnal and nocturnal species. It is a "timing messenger," signaling nighttime information throughout the body. Exposure to light at night, especially short-wavelength light, can slow or even cease nocturnal melatonin production. Suppression of melatonin by light at night resulting in circadian disruption has been implicated in sleep disturbances, increased risk for diabetes and obesity, as well as increased risk for more serious diseases, such as breast cancer, if circadian disruption occurs for many consecutive years, such as in nightshift workers.

"Technology developments have led to bigger and brighter televisions, computer screens, and cell phones," said Wood, who used the study as the basis for her master's thesis. "To produce white light, these electronic devices must emit light at short wavelengths, which makes them potential sources for suppressing or delaying the onset of melatonin in the evening, reducing sleep duration and disrupting sleep. This is particularly worrisome in populations such as young adults and adolescents, who already tend to be night owls."

In the study, the participants were divided into three groups. The first group viewed their tablets through a pair of clear goggles fitted with 470-nm (blue) light from light emitting diodes (LEDs). This was a "true positive" condition because the blue light is known to be a strong stimulus for suppressing melatonin. The second group viewed their tablets through orange-tinted glasses, capable of filtering out the short-wavelength radiation that can suppress melatonin; this was the "dark control" condition. The third group did not wear glasses or goggles. Each tablet was set to full brightness.

In order to accurately record personal light exposures during the experiment, each subject wore a Dimesimeter close to the eye. The Dimesimeter is a small calibrated light meter device developed by the LRC that continuously records circadian light and activity levels."

The research team established that duration of exposure and the distance between the eye and the display, which determines the amount of light reaching the back of the eye, affects melatonin levels. Melatonin suppression after a one-hour exposure to the tablet was not significantly affected. However, after a two-hour exposure there was significant suppression.

The type of task being performed on the tablets also determines how much light is delivered to the cornea and, therefore, the impact on evening melatonin levels. As shown by the team's Dimesimeter measurements, the range of photopic illuminance levels at the cornea from the tablets alone varied from 5 lux, which is not likely to affect melatonin, to over 50 lux, which would result in measurable melatonin suppression after a two-hour exposure. Therefore, before any generalizations can be made, it is important to measure how much light one is receiving from these self-luminous devices.

Until manufacturers develop more "circadian-friendly" electronic devices that increase or decrease light exposure based on time of day, Figueiro has several recommendations to reduce their effects on sleep. "We recommended dimming these devices at night as much as possible in order to minimize melatonin suppression, and limiting the amount of time spent using these devices prior to bedtime."

The study was funded by Sharp Laboratories of America.

New D.C. Campaign Finance Reform Would Ban Lobbyist Bundling ...

Nathan Gray

Attorney General Irvin Nathan (left) and Mayor Vincent Gray.

District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray (D) and Attorney General Irvin Nathan introduced new campaign finance reform legislation today that would, among other things, ban registered lobbyists from bundling contributions.

The bill (PDF), which includes new prohibitions on contributions by government contractors and grant recipients, would increase penalties for campaign finance violations and give the attorney general's office new prosecutorial authority for misdemeanor violations. The proposal comes after a year of persistent ethics-related headaches for the District, from the resignation of two councilmembers to an ongoing investigation of Gray's 2010 campaign.

The proposed legislation would add on to an ethics reform package the District of Columbia Council passed last year. Campaign finance reform took center stage after a series of campaign finance-related scandals this year, including a guilty plea from a woman accused of funneling more than $650,000 to a shadow campaign supporting Gray in the 2010 election. Gray has never been charged with wrongdoing.

During today's press conference, Gray did not directly address recent events surrounding his campaign, but said that he fully supports the reform proposal. "The proposal will have to stand on its merits," he said. Nathan said that efforts to reform campaign finance laws began before some of the recent scandals, but acknowledged that they do serve as part of the "background" now.

Under the proposed legislation, registered lobbyists or those acting on behalf of lobbyists would be barred from bundling, which means arranging or passing along groups of contributions to sitting officials or candidates. Other provisions include new reporting requirements for campaign contributors.

Nathan said his office consulted with local law firms, lobby shops and the American Bar Association about the bundling prohibition provision. He said the new rules were not aimed at interfering with lobbyists and others trying to get their message out, noting that lobbyists could still make individual contributions and that the proposal didn't alter the maximum allowable contribution.

The proposal would give the attorney general's office the same enforcement teeth to prosecute misdemeanor violations as the U.S. attorney's office, although only federal prosecutors would continue to handle felony crimes. Misdemeanor charges for a campaign finance law violation would carry a maximum penalty of a $5,000 fine or 6 months in prison (but not both), while felony charges for a knowing violation of campaign finance laws would carry a maximum penalty of a $10,000 fine, five years in prison, or both.

Nathan said that the proposal "contemplates coordination" between his office and the U.S. attorney's office as far as deciding which office would prosecute misdemeanor cases.

Individuals or companies with contracts or grants with the city that exceed $250,000 would be barred under the proposed legislation from contributing to any elected official or candidate who would be involved in the approval process for a period of time. They would also be barred from contributing to any entity where an elected official or candidate holds a significant financial interest.

The attorney general's office is accepting public comment on the proposed legislation through September 17, when the mayor will formally submit it to the council for consideration.

Myanmar communal bloodshed leaves deep scars

Charred stumps and scattered rubbish are all that remain of a once-bustling community in strife-torn western Myanmar, just one of many razed to the ground in recent communal violence.

The clashes which broke out in June between Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims have left dozens of people dead and torn apart communities, forcing tens of thousands on both sides to seek refuge in dusty camps and shelters.

Nawseema Har Tu Fa said she fled her village after it was torched during the wave of violence that turned longtime neighbours into bitter enemies.

"We had no problem with the Buddhist people before. We never quarrelled with them before. We lived together, we used to speak. We went to the market every day together," she told AFP in a village near the Rakhine state capital Sittwe where many Rohingya have sought sanctuary.

"The main reason we came here is to protect our children, otherwise they might have died there."

An estimated 70,000 people -- 50,000 Rohingya and 20,000 Buddhists -- are in emergency accommodation in the Sittwe area, police told an AFP reporter who visited the remote region near the border with Bangladesh.

They languish in camps or cramped monasteries, dependent on food handouts.

"There are no houses or shelter in their own villages, they were all burned down, so that's why they are here," said Soe Myint, manager of the Kaung Dokar refugee camp, one of six Rohingya camps in Sittwe.

Almost 90 people, both Buddhists and Rohingya, were killed during the violence in June, according to official figures which rights groups fear grossly underestimate the real toll.

The riots broke out after a Buddhist woman was allegedly raped and murdered by a group of Rohingya men.

Access to affected areas is restricted by the authorities, which say that the situation has been relatively calm in recent weeks.

But officials reported that renewed clashes left several people dead earlier this month, underscoring the tinderbox atmosphere.

Rohingya driven from their homes are not allowed to leave the camps -- ostensibly for their own safety. But the restriction has left the Rohingya community out of work and reliant on World Food Programme supplies.

"We do not have enough food, as we do not have the possibility to go to Sittwe downtown to buy everything we need," said displaced Rohingya Abu Shukur.

Faced with heavy criticism from rights groups and outcry from the Muslim world after the unrest, Myanmar's government has denied accusations of abuse of Rohingya villagers by security forces in Rakhine.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has accused Myanmar forces of opening fire on Rohingya during the June outbreak of unrest, as well as committing rape and standing by as rival mobs attacked each other.

Speaking a dialect similar to one in neighbouring Bangladesh, the Rohingya are seen as illegal immigrants by the Myanmar government and many Burmese, who describe them as "Bengalis" or "kalar" -- a derogatory term for Muslims.

"Successive governments and regimes have taken in the Muslim kalar, illegally allowing them in" in return for bribes, said senior monk Oo Ku Maar Ka, the head of Gade Chay Monastery.

Myanmar recently announced it had established a new commission to establish the cause of the sectarian clashes and recommend measures to ease tensions and find "ways for peaceful coexistence".

For now that appears a distant goal as deep mistrust poisons relations between the segregated communities.

"We knew the ones who burned down our houses," said Saw Saw, one of thousands of displaced Rakhine Buddhists sheltering in local monasteries. "If Rohingya from outside come in then it will be even worse."

You'll be able to scoop up a new phone for just $125, a major discount off of the usual $200 price tag.

Keep in mind that this is all in light of the new iPhone launching next month -- buying a new phone now would lock you into a contract for a while and you'd just be a spectator for the iPhone 5 launch.

But if you don't care about being on the cutting edge, you can't do much better than this.

Steelers Special-Teams Coach Al Everest Says 'Professional Differences' Led To His Firing

The Pittsburgh made a surprising announcement on Thursday when they fired special-teams coach Al Everest. The timing seemed curious and even Everest couldn't see it coming, according to Pro Football Weekly.

It's highly unusual for teams to fire coaches in the middle of the preseason. When asked about the curious timing and whether he was surprised by the move, Everest said, "It was a surprise for me, but the bottom line is that it was about professional differences."

Everest was hired by the team prior to the 2010 season and was on the staff when it lost to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV. Prior to that, he was a coach with the San Francisco 49ers.

Assistant special-teams coach Amos Jones will take over for Everest. He has been with the team since 2007.

Jones will be thrown into the action right away as the team plays Buffalo on Saturday night. The regular season begins in 16 days for Jones and the Steelers.

Beam raised at new University of Colorado health care facility in Lone Tree

Johnathan Gram, left, and Brad Spiewak swing a beam into place, topping off the beam structure for a new hospital in Lone Tree. University of Colorado Health wants the 36,000-square-foot facility to serve patients in the south metro area. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)

University of Colorado Health and the University of Colorado School of Medicine on Wednesday raised the high beam on what will be the new Lone Tree Health Center, the latest in the health system's group of Front Range health facilities.

If a vote Tuesday goes the way polls suggest, the system will soon add Colorado Springs hospitals to the network that now includes University of Colorado Hospital, Poudre Valley Hospital and Medical Center of the Rockies, University Hospital spokesman Dan Weaver said.

The 36,000-square-foot Lone Tree Health Center and adjacent out-patient surgery center are expected to provide many of the same services and specialties offered at University Hospital in Aurora.

Work on the building at 9548 Park Meadows Drive began in May. The health center is expected to open in about three months.

"The city of Lone Tree is an ideal location for us because it offers the best space and the best location in terms of giving a large population convenient access to our providers and services," University Hospital CEO John Harney said in a statement.

The medical center is a few miles from south Sky Ridge Medical Center.

The new center will include 36 exam rooms, three procedure rooms and cardiac ecograph and treadmill stress-test equipment.

University of Colorado Health was formed in January, when a joint operating agreement between Poudre Valley Health System and University Hospital was reached.

On Tuesday, Colorado Springs voters will decide whether to lease Memorial Health System, which includes Memorial North and Central hospitals and some clinics, to the partnership.
