Sizzling Hot Book Reviews: Daryl Devore Interview

Please tell the readers about yourself and the books you write?

I'm Daryl Devore. If you don't know me ? Daryl rhymes with Carl (because I'm female). Devore is sounded out ? Dev ? ore ? A. There should be an accent over the e at the end of my name ? but some blogs sites can't distinguish that ? so I don't bother.

I live in rural Ontario, Canada and write erotic romance. I have 3 published works. A Kept Woman, Sexy Red Hood and Black Dorn.

Tell us about your latest book. Do you have anything new in the works and can you tell us a bit about it?

My latest book is Black Dorn ? an erotic medieval romance. Branwyn is sold to be trained as a courtesan. Malack is a war weary prince. Branwyn's beauty and feistiness captures Malack's attention and soon after that his heart. All he has to do is fight to the death to keep his right to ascend to the throne and protect Branwyn.

What inspired you to write Sexy Red Hood?

Sexy Red Hood is my twisted fairy tale. The publisher asked the writers to come up with novellas that were based on fairy tales. We could choose the one we wanted and for some reason Little Red Riding Hood popped into my head. Red Hood is a junior accountant at her family's chocolate business. Her grandfather, father and brother were killed in a plane crash which thrust the women into their corporate positions. Red's mother suspects Grandma has run off on a cruise with a gigolo and sends Red to deal with the situation.

She meets the big bad wolf, the ever helpful woodsman, loses an emerald necklace and wakes up in a utility closet.

There's dancing, singing, whipped cream and melted chocolate.

How do you describe your writing style?

I don't know that I have a style yet. And I'm not sure I really know how to answer this question. I've dabbled in different genres because I'm still trying to find my niche. I guess my style will be more obvious when I've settled down.

When writing who is in charge you or your characters? How do you deal with bossy characters?

My characters are in charge. I have an idea where the chapter is going but they tend to lead me off in a different direction. Which I don't mind, I love figuring things out. The characters took me here ? I need to get them to there ? how am I going to do this? Bossy characters are easy to deal with ? I threaten to write them out of the book. I'm not afraid to turn a simple romance into a murder mystery if a character steps out of line too far.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging about writing?

At the moment, it's finding the time to write. Promo has turned out to be a time eating monster. Plus it's summer and the outdoors is calling. I live in Eastern Ontario. We have long cold winters. I don't want to waste a moment of warmth and sunshine.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your books?

The incredible difference there is between writing for academia and writing for fiction. High school and university trained me to write and speak a specific way and changing that to sound not so pompous and to use contractions has been an interesting adventure.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

Join a good critique group. No two ways about it. Your mother/sister/aunt/best friend ? don't count as critiquers. They may find spelling mistakes but there is a lot more to getting a story right. And if the story is horrible, they'll probably not want to tell you.

Now for a fun question, what is in your TBR pile?

Well I am waiting for a bunch of friend's books to come out. I won a gift card from Jennifer Lowry and I'm keeping it until Hard Core comes out in October ? so I guess that's almost in my pile.

When did you know that you wanted to be a writer? Was your family and friends supportive?

When ? ? I'd say a starting point was when I took creative writing in high school (gr. 10 ? junior yr) and an assignment was to write something. It had to be a story and had to be a minimum of 5,000 words. I wrote a book. The story just poured out. It was 80,000 words or so.

Family and friends are generally supportive of the fact that I'm a writer, but most don't know I write erotic romances. At least I don't think they do.

Who (if anyone) has been instrumental in inspiring you as a writer?

Dee Dawning's been my mentor. He's guided me through the issues of being a newbie author and kicked my butt when I needed it.

What are you currently working on? Anything you can share regarding your current Work in Progress?

I currently have 2 WIP. I'll chat about one of them. Capri's Fate. It's an erotic contemporary fantasy about a corporate vice president who is dragged to a sex toy convention by her friend. A deep male voice whispers in her ear and then follows her home. Writing a sex scene with an invisible male was a challenge.
