Pakistan Taliban threaten to send Musharraf to 'hell' when he returns

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's Taliban have threatened, in a video released on Saturday, to use suicide bombers and snipers to kill former President Pervez Musharraf when he returns home from exile.

In a Taliban video obtained by Reuters, Adnan Rasheed, who took part in a previous attempt to assassinate Musharraf, said: "The mujahideen of Islam have prepared a special squad to send Musharraf to hell. There are suicide bombers, snipers, a special assault unit and a close combat team."

Musharraf angered the Taliban and other groups by joining the U.S. war on terror following the September 11 attacks and later launching a major crackdown on militancy in Pakistan.

He is due to return home on Sunday from Dubai, after nearly four years of self-imposed exile, in time to take part in parliamentary elections on May 11.

Musharraf seized power in a 1999 coup and resigned in 2008 when his allies lost a vote and a new government threatened him with impeachment. He left the country a year later.

The former army general faces the possibility of arrest on charges that he failed to provide adequate security for former prime minister Benazir Bhutto before her assassination in 2007, and in relation to other cases.

But his most immediate concern may be Taliban militants seeking revenge.

"It is said when the jackal's death is near it comes to town," said Rasheed, who was among 400 prisoners who were broken out of a jail by militants in 2012.

DENVER (AP) ? Colorado investigators on Saturday said for the first time that a former prison inmate who was killed in a gunfight with Texas authorities is a suspect in the death of Colorado's state prison system chief.

The evidence gathered in Texas after the death of Evan Spencer Ebel provided a "strong, strong lead" in the fatal shooting of Colorado Department of Corrections director Tom Clements, who was killed at his front door, El Paso County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said Saturday.

Kramer also confirmed Ebel had been a member of the 211s, a white supremacist prison gang in Colorado. It was not known if Ebel knew who Clements was and that he was the state's top prison official, Kramer said.

A darkly ironic connection emerged among Ebel, Clements and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper when the governor confirmed Friday he was a longtime friend of Ebel's father, attorney Jack Ebel.

Jack Ebel had testified before Colorado lawmakers two years ago that solitary confinement in a Colorado prison was destroying his son's psyche.

When Hickenlooper interviewed Clements for the top prison job in Colorado, he mentioned the case as an example of why the prison system needed reform, but Hickenlooper said he did not mention Ebel by name. Later, Clements eased the use of solitary confinement in Colorado and tried to make it easier for people held there to re-enter society.

Hickenlooper's spokesman said Clements did not know specifically who Ebel was.

Clements was shot Tuesday night when he answered the door of his home in a wooded, rural area north of Colorado Springs.

Kramer said investigators were trying to determine whether the 211 gang was involved in Clements' death.

The Colorado Department of Corrections was also investigating Clements' death, but spokeswoman Alison Morgan declined to say whether the 211 gang was a focus of the inquiry.

Denver police say Ebel is also a suspect in the March 17 slaying of pizza delivery man Nathan Leon. Texas authorities found a Domino's pizza delivery box and a jacket or shirt from the pizza chain in the trunk of the car Ebel was driving.

Authorities previously said that car was similar to one seen not far from Clements' home the night he was killed, and bullets Ebel fired at Texas police were the same caliber and brand as the bullet or bullets that killed Clements. But until Saturday they had stopped short of saying Ebel was a suspect.

Kramer stressed that investigators have not yet confirmed a link between Ebel and Clements' death. Tests were under way to determine if the weapon used to kill Clements was the same one recovered from Ebel in Texas.

Results could be available Monday, Kramer said.

Ebel, who was paroled from a Colorado prison in January, was fatally shot Thursday by authorities in Texas after a pursuit reaching 100 mph.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's office in Texas said Ebel died from a gunshot wound in his forehead.

There was no indication that Hickenlooper's relationship with the Ebels played a role in the shooting. Hickenlooper said he did not having any role in Evan Ebel's parole.

Evan Ebel was paroled Jan. 28 as part of a mandatory process after serving his full prison term, Morgan said. He had most recently been sentenced to four years for punching a prison guard in 2008, according to state records.

The entire state prison system has remained under lockdown. Morgan said the lockdown would not be lifted until after a public memorial service for Clements on Sunday.

Samsung mulls sale of Dutch EInk display subsidiary to Amazon

It's not often that we hear of Samsung suffering from buyer's remorse, but it looks like it should have kept e-ink manufacturer Liqavista's receipt in the box-file marked "Important." Bloomberg's Person Familiar With The Matter(TM) believes Samsung is trying to flog the Dutch electrowetting display outfit it bought two years ago -- back when such technology was the holy grail of screens. Now the Korean giant is looking for a sub-$100 million sale to Amazon, which might be able to use the tech in future iterations of the Kindle. When asked, a Samsung spokesperson said that the acquisition didn't meet its expectations, which makes us sad for the future of e-ink devices beyond e-readers -- now the folks at YotaPhone are our only hope.

Shootout in Texas may be linked to Colo. deaths

By Corrie MacLaggan

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A white supremacist ex-convict who died in a roadside gun battle with Texas police was being investigated for possible links to the deaths of a Colorado prisons chief and a pizza delivery man, law enforcement officials said on Friday.

Police said that Evan Spencer Ebel, a 28-year-old parolee from Denver killed by police on Thursday after a high-speed car chase through Decatur, Texas, was being investigated in connection with the death of Tom Clements, executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Clements, 58, was shot dead on Tuesday when he answered the door at his home near the community of Monument, in El Paso County about 45 miles south of Denver.

Denver police have named Ebel as a suspect in the killing of pizza delivery man Nathan Leon in Denver two days earlier.

Ebel was a member of a white supremacist prison gang, the 211 Crew, and had been paroled in the Denver area, a law enforcement official said.

The Hornady 9-mm bullets Ebel fired at Texas police were the same brand as those used in the killing of Clements, Denver television station KCNC-TV reported on Friday, citing a search warrant affidavit filed in Texas for police to search Ebel's Cadillac.

In the car's trunk, there was a pizza deliverer's shirt or jacket, the station reported, citing court documents.

The El Paso County (Colorado) Sheriff's Office said in a statement late on Friday that bullet casings collected at the scene in Texas would be sent to the state crime lab to determine if the same weapon was used to kill Clements.

Authorities were also looking for ties between the death of Clements and the January killing of Mark Hasse, a prosecutor in the Kaufman County District Attorney's Office. Kaufman County is east of Dallas.

The January 31 killing of Hasse occurred the same day the U.S. Department of Justice revealed that the Kaufman County District Attorney's Office was among the agencies involved in a racketeering case against the Aryan Brotherhood white supremacist group.

"The Dallas and Denver offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation are comparing the homicides of Mark Hasse and Tom Clements to determine if there is any evidence linking the two crimes," Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh said in a statement.

LENGTHY CRIMINAL HISTORY

In Texas, Ebel shot and wounded a Montague County sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop and fled. He led police on a car chase that ended when his car, with Colorado plates, collided with an 18-wheeler truck.

Ebel died at a Fort Worth hospital of a single gunshot wound to the forehead, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said.

"I do know that he has a lengthy criminal history," said Sheriff David Walker of Wise County in Texas, whose deputies were involved in the car chase.

Investigators looking into the death of Clements went to Decatur, Texas, to examine Ebel's Cadillac, said Jeff Kramer, spokesman for the El Paso County sheriff in Colorado.

According to Colorado court records, Ebel was arrested at least seven times between 2003 and 2010 for crimes including burglary, weapons possession, assault, menacing and robbery.

"He clearly was a troubled young man, but there was nothing that would have suggested he was capable of these types of incidents," Denver-based attorney Scott Robinson, who represented Ebel in four cases in 2004, told Reuters.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper confirmed news reports that he was a friend of the parolee's father, Jack Ebel, who he said he met while working for an oil company soon after moving to the state about 30 years ago.

"Although Jack loved his son, he never asked me to intervene on his behalf and I never asked for any special treatment for his son," Hickenlooper said in a statement released on Friday.

Hickenlooper said that Evan Ebel had served every day of his original sentence and was released on "mandatory parole at the end of the time he was ordered to be incarcerated."

Mark Potok, senior fellow with the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, said the 211 Crew, also known as the Aryan Alliance, was founded in 1995 by Colorado prison inmate Benjamin Davis.

Davis is serving a 108-year sentence after his conviction for racketeering, conspiracy and other charges under the state's Organized Crime Control Act.

"The group started out as a protective group, but quickly morphed into a criminal enterprise," Potok said, adding that the 211s are known for the "harshness" of their discipline, he said.

He said the 211s were a "blood in, blood out" gang, meaning a prospective member must commit a violent act at the direction of one of the gang's higher-ups, or "shot callers."

Once paroled 211 members are on the street they are expected to start earning money, usually through criminal activity, and forward the proceeds to incarcerated gang leaders, Potok said.

This Case Turns Your iPhone Into a Satellite Phone (UPDATED)

When people call Apple's iPhone a "global device" it's really something of a misnomer. Can it work on a desolate, high peak? Or in the middle of the ocean? No, it's limited to a network of ground-based antenna. This simple case frees the iPhone from those shackles, and lets it work pretty much anywhere in the whole wide world. More »

After seeing Pope, Biden wraps up ?soft power? trip to Rome

Vice President Joe Biden (L) is greeted by Pope Francis in Saint Peter's Basilica after??Vice President Joe Biden didn?t return from Rome with a new treaty, or any major public agreement to pursue a common foe or a common purpose. If there was a peacemaking push, it was in the sometimes difficult relationship between President Barack Obama?s administration and the Catholic Church. And the main headline didn?t even need to include him: ?Pope Francis celebrates installation mass.?

But one thing Biden did during his whirlwind visit to Rome?not even 48 hours on the ground?was highlight American prestige and the symbolism of U.S. global leadership, crucial but hard-to-measure sources of ?soft power? influence in world affairs.

Sure, there were a couple of what the media has come to describe as ?Biden being Biden? moments (a label his communications staff has tried to appropriate). At a time when partisan Washington feuds over painful spending cuts known as sequestration, Biden joked that sequestered Cardinals who speedily picked a new pope had proven more decisive than, say, partisan Washington.

?I didn?t realize you?d arrange for a new pope so quickly,? Biden said to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano as they met in the Quirinale Palace.

"They are quicker than Italian politics," Napolitano replied in English.

"They're quicker than American politics," the vice president said with a grin.

And he quipped that he had to attend an evening reception with American cardinals ?or I?ll lose my soul." (Oh, for pete?s sake, it was a joke, though perhaps one given an edge by the aforementioned tensions between Church and State.)

So what did Biden bring to Europe, apart from a fleet of black vehicles with ?Taxation Without Representation? license plates, a small army of Secret Service agents, a phalanx of staff, and a letter from Obama to the new pope (contents unknown)?

First, prestige. Lyndon Johnson may have disparaged the vice presidency as worth roughly a "bucket of warm [censored]," but news stories about Pope Francis?s installation mass invariably mentioned Biden among the guests who had come to (figuratively?) kiss the ring. Yes, it goes both ways?Biden?s presence affirmed the Vatican?s power in world affairs (and domestic U.S. politics) even as it showcased the importance of American support for the venerable institution.

Second?let?s call it ?relations maintenance.? We won?t know for months, if ever, what impact Biden?s conversations with Italy?s president and outgoing prime minister about the state of European financial affairs will have.

But Italy is an important ally. (Do you care about the Sept. 11 2012 attack on the American compound in Benghazi? Then you care about U.S.-Italian relations. Italy maintains a potent intelligence presence in North Africa, and notably in Libya, a former colony.) And with Europe struggling to climb out of its financial crisis, Italy?s troubled economy worries officials in Washington?especially when coupled with its political dysfunction (though Italians might say the same about the American economy).

And the Vatican has traditionally played an important role in world affairs.

Perhaps only foreign policy nerds (guilty!) will note that Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci?s meeting with Biden on Monday was unveiled at the last minute, after the announcement that the vice president would meet with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic. (Kosovo won its independence from Serbia thanks in large part to NATO military help.)

As for that meeting with Nikolic? Biden?s office said the vice president highlighted ?our desire for a deeper partnership in the years ahead??but also better relations with Kosovo.

?The vice president continues to encourage both Serbia and Kosovo to take the steps necessary to normalize relations to advance their European integration and to ensure a more secure and prosperous future for the people of both countries,? Biden?s office said.

The vice president also met with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, notably thanking Warsaw for ?its agreement to host planned Missile Defense assets.? (Yup, ?Missile Defense? capitalized in the statement from Biden?s office.)

Biden?s office didn?t say it, but the meetings with leaders of Serbia and Poland came at a time when Washington is worriedly watching relations with Russia.

The only controversy in Rome may come from the fact that Biden and House Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, both Catholics who have defended access to abortion, took Communion. Conservative Catholics have condemned that in the past.Vice President Joe Biden gestures while entering to meet Italy's President Giorgio Napolitano at the Quirinale??

What will come of Biden?s trip? Maybe a few photos from Pope Francis? installation mass, and the official receiving line. Maybe a couple of allies reassured about the degree to which Washington values them. Maybe a better sense of just how bad things might get in Europe before they get better. Maybe a little push to Serbia and Kosovo to make nice. A reaffirmation that the United States still dominates world affairs despite China?s assertive rise. Nothing dramatic, though, at least in the short term. Just the grind of American diplomacy.

Just Biden being Biden.

CFTC Discussing Gold Price Manipulation | Gold Investing News

CFTC Discussing Gold Price Manipulation

Gold market manipulation is sometimes dismissed as the chatter of conspiracy theorists. But according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), US regulators have joined the conversation. People with knowledge of the matter told?the WSJ that the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is considering whether the gold prices set in London are being manipulated.

A formal investigation has not been launched, but internal discussions are reportedly taking place at the CFTC about the setting of the gold and?silver?fix in London.

The Libor scandal, which involved interest rate rigging, provides a valid reason to review and potentially investigate all financial benchmarks,?according to Bart Chilton, one of the CFTC?s commissioners.

?The idea that pervasive manipulation, or attempted manipulation, is so widespread should make us all query the veracity of the other key marks. What about energy, swaps, the gold and silver fixes in London and the whole litany of ?bors?? Why would they be any different in the minds of those that may have sought to push or pull rates,? Chilton said ahead of a roundtable event in Washington last month.

The International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) seems to agree that lack of oversight presents the risk of other benchmarks being manipulated.

A Bloomberg article notes that?a confidential IOSCO paper states that ?the risk of manipulation will be greater where participants in the process have both incentive and opportunity to submit inaccurate data or apply a methodology inaccurately.?

?Furthermore, where judgment is required in determining the data to be submitted, the problem is particularly acute,? the paper also states.

The Libor scandal occurred under a system where numerous banks were asked on behalf of the British Bankers? Association to honestly report how much it cost them to borrow from other financial institutions, according to Bloomberg. The figures they reported were then used to calculate benchmark lending rates. Unfortunately, some firms were submitting false information.

In contrast to the Libor system, only five banks are involved in setting the London gold price: Societe Generale (EPA:GLE), HSBC Holdings (LSE:HSBA,NYSE:HBC), the Bank of Nova Scotia (TSX:BNS,NYSE:BNS), Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB) and Barclays (NYSE:BCS).

London?s silver fix involves an even smaller group of just three banks: HSBC, the Bank of Nova Scotia and Deutsche Bank.

Though only a few firms are involved in setting London?s gold and silver fixes, these prices affect metal transactions on a global scale.

The CFTC is credited as playing the lead role in unearthing the Libor scandal. The agency?s chairman, Gary Gensler, has also reportedly been appointed as the head of a task force that will examine financial benchmarks and help develop policy guidelines for them. But many people have deeply ingrained skepticism about any efforts made by US regulators with regards to the precious metals markets.

The CFTC has been intensely criticized for blatantly ignoring manipulative acts in the past. And it has not helped that an investigation into silver manipulation that the agency launched in 2008 has still not been resolved.

One critic of the agency is Chris Powell, secretary/treasurer of the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee (better known as GATA).

?None of us alive today have ever seen a free gold price,? he told CNBC last week.

Powell dismissed the news of the CFTC?s internal discussions about metal price manipulation as likely just a response to pressure from the public.

?When the attorney general of the United States says the banks are bigger than the government, I don?t think we can expect the CFTC to be candid with us on this issue,? Powell said, referring to Attorney General Eric Holder?s comments that big banks are too big to jail.

But across the pond, views of the CFTC are colored with thoughts of RBS, UBS (NYSE:UBS) and Barclays paying penalties of $2.5 billion for their role in the Libor scandal, with about half of that money going to the CFTC. The Guardian?said?that after the WSJ story broke, London?s financial sector braced itself for an official investigation.

Abuse victims want pope to open Argentina files

(AP) ? A U.S. group that tracks clergy abuse called on Pope Francis to apologize Tuesday for what it called the Argentine church's protection of two priests who were eventually convicted of abusing children.

The Bishop Accountability group cites the case of Father Julio Cesar Grassi, who ran the "Happy Children" foundation and was convicted of pedophilia in 2008, and Father Napoleon Sasso, convicted in 2007 of abusing girls at a soup kitchen in suburban Buenos Aires. Sasso had been moved to the kitchen by church authorities after he got into trouble for pedophilia in remote San Juan province.

Jorge Bergoglio, who became Argentina's cardinal in 2001, wasn't directly involved in any sex abuse scandals or coverups, but he failed to remove priests accused of sexually abusing their faithful, and refused to meet with the victims, their attorney Ernesto Moreau told The Associated Press.

"Bergoglio has been the strongest man in the Argentine church since the beginning of this century," Moreau said, and yet "the leadership of the church has never done anything to remove these people from these places, and neither has it done anything to relieve the pain of the victims."

Now Grassi is free on appeal, thanks in part to the church's report. Before he was convicted, he thanked Bergoglio for "never abandoning him."

Bishop Accountability co-director Anne Doyle says this shows Bergoglio was behind the curve in the Catholic church's global struggle to deal with sex abuse by its priests, which began in 2002 after thousands of cases became public in the United States and around the world.

"We would be alarmed if the archbishop Bergoglio had done this in the '60s or '70s. That would be sad and disturbing. But the fact that he did this just five years ago, when other bishops in other countries were meeting victims and implementing tough reporting laws, it puts him behind some of his American counterparts, that's for sure," Doyle told the AP.

The group said that to send a message of zero tolerance, Francis should tell the Buenos Aires archdiocese to release the complete files on these two cases; publicly identify any priests who are "credibly accused"; publicly endorse the mandatory reporting by church officials to law enforcement of any suspected abuse; admit that he was wrong to defend abusive priests; apologize to the victims of Grassi and Sasso; and offer to meet with the victims now.

Doyle noted that The Washington Post reported on these cases just as Francis was being installed as pope in a Vatican ceremony seen around the world.

"The victims of these two priests are the very children of God about whom he was speaking in his homily today," she said. "They are the most vulnerable of the poor. We hope that Francis will seize this as a priority and reach out to the victims and rectify his terrible insensitivity to them when he was archbishop."

Messages left by phone and email by the AP seeking comment from the Buenos Aires archbishopric's press office were not immediately returned Tuesday.

Inherited genetic variations have a major impact on childhood leukemia risk

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes that carry instructions for assembling the proteins that do the work of cells. Work led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital found that children who inherit certain variations in four particular genes are at much higher risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

The study also showed that Hispanic patients were more likely than patients of European or African ancestry to inherit high-risk versions of two of these genes. ALL rates are known to be higher among Hispanic children than those of European or African ancestry, this discovery points to at least one reason for that difference.

Each person's genome includes two copies of each gene, one from each parent. Thus, individuals could inherit up to eight high-risk versions of the four genes tied to an increased ALL risk. In this study, researchers found that having more than five copies of the risk genes resulted in a nine-fold greater risk of developing ALL in childhood than inheriting no more than one copy.

The report appears online March 19 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The findings stem from one of the largest multi-ethnic studies of genetic variation and ALL susceptibility ever conducted. The work included 2,450 pediatric ALL patients and 10,977 individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds without the disease.

The study's senior author, Jun J. Yang, Ph.D., an assistant member of the St. Jude Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, said that the absolute risk for a particular child of developing ALL remains low. "ALL is a complex disease that likely involves many genes," he said. "The discoveries we are reporting in this paper are an important step forward in terms of understanding why children develop ALL in the first place, particularly for those with African or Hispanic ethnicity. However, this is probably still just a small part of the complete picture."

Along with providing insight into ethnicity and ALL risk, the study also offered clues to understanding the age pattern of ALL, which peaks in children ages 2 to 4. These findings suggest that younger patients might be most vulnerable to the effects of the high-risk gene variations.

This year about 3,000 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with ALL, making it the most common childhood cancer. It is also among the most curable. Evidence that inheritance plays a role in childhood ALL risk has been building in recent years, but previous studies focused almost exclusively on patients of European ancestry. Thanks in part to new statistical methods for studying genetic variation in more diverse populations, this study expanded the quest to understand the genetic basis of ALL risk to include patients of African and Hispanic as well as European ancestry.

The effort involved ALL patients treated at St. Jude and through the Children's Oncology Group, the world's largest cooperative pediatric cancer research organization, As a comparison, investigators also screened DNA from individuals without ALL. Researchers used an automated system to check each person's DNA for 709,059 gene variations. In this study, ethnicity was assigned based on gene variations representative of European, African and Native American ancestry.

Previous studies from St. Jude and others linked pediatric ALL risk to common differences in the ARID5B, IKZF1, CEBPE and CDKN2A/2B genes. All play a role in normal blood and immune system development. ALL is a cancer of certain immune cells. In this study, researchers also discovered several variations in the gene PIP4K2A, which were associated with an elevated pediatric ALL risk. Hispanic patients were more likely than others in this study to inherit high-risk versions of the ARID5B and PIP4K2A genes, while African-American patients were less likely to have these variants.

The study's first authors are Heng Xu and Wenjian Yang, both of St. Jude. The other authors are Virginia Perez-Andreu, Yiping Fan, Cheng Cheng, Deqing Pei, Charles Mullighan, Deepa Bhojwani, Ching-Hon Pui, William Evans and Mary Relling, all of St. Jude; Meenakshi Devidas, University of Florida, Gainesville; Paul Scheet, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston; Esteban Gonzalez Burchard, Celeste Eng, Scott Huntsman, Dara Torgerson and Mignon Loh, all of the University of California, San Francisco; Michael Dean, National Cancer Institute; Naomi Winick, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas; Paul Martin, Duke University, Durham, N.C.; Bruce Camitta, Medical College of Wisconsin; W. Realty Mogul Launches Its Real Estate Crowdfunding Platform (For ...

Realty Mogul, a site where accredited investors can can pool their money to back real estate deals, is going live today.

Co-founder and Jilliene Helman argued that in the current financial landscape, real estate is ?one of the ways that people can still get yields.? She also acknowledged that there?s a lot of excitement right now about equity crowdfunding for startups, but she noted that investments on Realty Mogul can start paying off in a few months (in the form of rent checks or loan payments), rather than five or ten years: ?Our big focus for investors is cash flow.?

For now, Helman said Realty Mogul is ?100 percent focused on accredited investors? (to qualify as an individual, you?d need to have a net worth of more than $1 million or income of more than $200,000). She also suggested that these kinds of investments could also be a good fit for the ?mass affluent? ??i.e., people making more than $100,000 a year who aren?t accredited investors ? but the company is currently waiting for the final regulations to come out of the JOBS Act before it decides whether to actually open up to that group.

Realty Mogul was incubated by the Microsoft/TechStars Accelerator in Seattle, and it?s also announcing a $500,000 seed round (more on that in a second). Participating angel investors include Gust CEO David S. Rose, Gordon Stephenson (who?s on the board of directors at Zillow), and serial entrepreneur Sky Kruse.

Even though it?s officially launching today, Realty Mogul already funded its first project ? AH Capital used the site to raise $110,000 to purchase and rehabilitate a duplex in Los Angeles.

When you join the site, you can browse a marketplace of different investments, then sign the paperwork and submit the payment for deals that you?re interested in. The investment only happens if the total funding goal is reached. If it is, you can then track your investments in an investor dashboard.

realty mogul dashboard

Helman said that one of her big goals is to build investor trust. For example, Realty Mogul links to all of the real estate companies? LinkedIn profiles, so users can see whether they?re connected to the company in some way.?For now, the site is limited to properties in Washington and California, although investors can participate in anywhere. Helman said she plans to expand gradually.

?We are a tech startup, and tech startups are supposed to grow as quickly as humanly possible,? Helman said. ?But we?re a financial services company first and a tech startup second, so I want to grow as quickly but as conservatively as possible. We need to make sure we?re keeping investor protections first.?

Other sites for real estate crowdfunding include?Fundrise?and?Prodigy Network.

Real Estate Madness ? March Madness for Real Estate

In honor of the upcoming March Madness?basketball tournament, where the best NCAA men?s basketball team in the country will be determined, the RealEstate.com team has decided to host a tournament of its own. Our objective is to determine what U.S. city is the best to live in by objectively assessing them based on a plethora of factors. Pristine cities with vibrant cultures and strong economies will go far in the tournament, while depopulated cultural wastelands will be eliminated quickly.

The RealEstate.com team has selected 64 major cities ? 16 from the West, East, Midwest and South ? and will pit them against each other in the March Madness-style single elimination bracket found below. May the best city win!

The Contendors

FORMAT: Region: City (seed)

The original bracket for the West for Real Estate Madness, our version of March MadnessWest: Los Angeles?(1), San Francisco?(2), Phoenix?(3), Seattle?(4), San Diego?(5), Honolulu?(6), Portland?(7), Las Vegas?(8), Salt Lake City?(9), Sacramento?(10), Anchorage?(11), Boise?(12), Albuquerque?(13), San Jose?(14), Bakersfield?(15), Santa Barbara?(16).

The original bracket for the East for Real Estate Madness, our version of March MadnessEast: New York?(1), Boston?(2), Washington, D.C.?(3), Philadelphia?(4), Charlotte?(5), Richmond?(6), Pittsburgh?(7), Baltimore?(8), Stamford?(9), Syracuse?(10), Providence?(11), Norfolk?(12), Hartford?(13), Raleigh?(14), Burlington (15), Buffalo?(16).

The original bracket for the Midwest for Real Estate Madness, our version of March MadnessMidwest: Chicago?(1), Minneapolis?(2), Denver?(3), St. Louis?(4), Indianapolis?(5), Milwaukee?(6), Oklahoma City?(7), Cleveland?(8), Cincinnati?(9), Omaha?(10), Kansas City?(11), Tulsa?(12), Boulder?(13), Detroit?(14), Wichita?(15), Grand Rapids?(16).

The original bracket for the South for Real Estate Madness, our version of March MadnessSouth: Dallas (1), Miami (2),?Atlanta (3), Houston?(4), Austin?(5), New Orleans?(6), Orlando?(7), Memphis?(8), San Antonio?(9), Jacksonville?(10), Nashville?(11), Louisville?(12), Savannah?(13),?Little Rock (14), Birmingham?(15), Jackson?(16).

Tournament Structure

The bracket divides cities up by region so that every city will only face opponents from its region up until the Final Four. This structure ensures that everyone in the U.S. has a strong chance of having a city from their respective region win the tournament. It also makes sense to compare each city with others from its region in the same way you gauge an apple?s quality by comparing it to other apples; we want to make sure the criteria used to assess cities are exactly the same.

Like the bracket used by the real March Madness tournament, ours initially matches cities with the lowest ranks (or ?seeds?) with the highest ranks. In this way, metropolises like Los Angeles and Chicago will face off against much smaller and lesser-known cities like Bakersfield and Wichita in the first round. While these ?games? are admittedly quite lopsided, there is no guarantee that the largest and most well-known city will win. No bottom-ranked team has ever beaten a top-ranked team in men?s basketball, but we can?t say yet whether or not this trend will carry over to our tournament!

How We Will Determine the Best U.S. City

To win a matchup, a city must be more enjoyable to live in than its opponent. While a city like St. Petersburg, Fla. has pleasant weather and impressive beaches, it would probably lose to a city like Boston, Mass. The latter has a vibrant urban culture, rich history, good public transportation and a nationally recognized bar and restaurant scene that, all things included, makes it a better place to live.

Here are some of the factors the RealEstate.com team will use to determine the winners and losers of our March Madness bracket:

  • Unemployment
  • Quality of schools
  • Cost of living
  • Real estate and rent prices
  • Culture or cultural significance
  • Quality of bars and restaurants
  • Economy (economic diversity, presence of high-paying jobs, etc.)
  • Crime rates
  • Transportation (traffic, public transportation, etc.)

There will be no algorithm or number-based system to guide our decision-making; we will strictly rely on qualitative assessments to decide each round?s winners.

The RealEstate.com team will also take into consideration the opinions of people who comment on this blog post and interact with us on social media. You can thus help your ?team? advance to the Final Four by doing what fans do best: cheering them on as loudly as you can!

However, while our readers? opinions will only be one consideration during most of the tournament, they will be able to directly influence the winners of every matchup in both the Final Four and the Final itself. We know you will have an opinion on which city should be crowned best in America, so please make it known!

The winners of the first round will be posted this week; check back soon to see what cities advanced.

Antarctica's first whale skeleton found with nine new deep-sea species

Mar. 18, 2013 ? Marine biologists have, for the first time, found a whale skeleton on the ocean floor near Antarctica, giving new insights into life in the sea depths. The discovery was made almost a mile below the surface in an undersea crater and includes the find of at least nine new species of deep-sea organisms thriving on the bones.

The research, involving the University of Southampton, Natural History Museum, British Antarctic Survey, National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and Oxford University, is published today in Deep-Sea Research II: Topical Studies in Oceanography.

"The planet's largest animals are also a part of the ecology of the very deep ocean, providing a rich habitat of food and shelter for deep sea animals for many years after their death," says Diva Amon, lead author of the paper based at University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science (which is based at NOC) and the Natural History Museum. "Examining the remains of this southern Minke whale gives insight into how nutrients are recycled in the ocean, which may be a globally important process in our oceans."

Worldwide, only six natural whale skeletons have ever been found on the seafloor. Scientists have previously studied whale carcasses, known as a 'whale fall', by sinking bones and whole carcasses. Despite large populations of whales in the Antarctic, whale falls have not been studied in this region until now.

"At the moment, the only way to find a whale fall is to navigate right over one with an underwater vehicle," says co-author Dr Jon Copley of University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science. Exploring an undersea crater near the South Sandwich Islands gave scientists just that chance encounter. "We were just finishing a dive with the UK's remotely operated vehicle, Isis, when we glimpsed a row of pale-coloured blocks in the distance, which turned out to be whale vertebrae on the seabed," continues Dr Copley.

When a whale dies and sinks to the ocean floor, scavengers quickly strip its flesh. Over time, other organisms then colonise the skeleton and gradually use up its remaining nutrients. Bacteria break down the fats stored in whale bones, for example, and in turn provide food for other marine life. Other animals commonly known as zombie worms can also digest whale bone.

"One of the great remaining mysteries of deep ocean biology is how these tiny invertebrates can spread between the isolated habitats these whale carcasses provide on the seafloor," says co-author Dr Adrian Glover at the Natural History Museum. 'Our discovery fills important gaps in this knowledge.'

The team surveyed the whale skeleton using high-definition cameras to examine the deep-sea animals living on the bones and collected samples to analyse ashore. Researchers think that the skeleton may have been on the seafloor for several decades. Samples also revealed several new species of deep-sea creatures thriving on the whale's remains, including a 'bone-eating zombie worm' known as Osedax burrowing into the bones and a new species of isopod crustacean, similar to woodlice, crawling over the skeleton. There were also limpets identical to those living at nearby deep-sea volcanic vents.

Evangelicals support path to citizenship

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Evangelical leaders said Monday they will support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants as part of immigration legislation, the first time they've taken an affirmative stance on the contentious issue.

Jim Wallis, head of the Christian social justice group Sojourners, said it's part of a "sea change" in the evangelical community, driven in part by the increasing numbers of immigrants in congregations. He said evangelical leaders have concluded that "we don't believe there are second-class images of God, and therefore we don't believe in a second-class status for people who are willing to follow an earned path to citizenship."

Sojourners is part of a coalition of evangelical groups called the Evangelical Immigration Table that has been lobbying for an immigration overhaul to bring the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants into legal status. Before Monday the groups had stopped short of advocating for citizenship, but they told reporters on a conference call that they've now concluded it's appropriate as religious leaders to support citizenship as well.

It's a step that may go farther than some members of evangelical congregations support, particularly those who are more politically conservative, but the leaders insisted that once the issue is viewed from the perspective of the Bible's injunction to welcome strangers, there's surprising agreement.

Legalization short of citizenship "does not bestow upon the recipient the full measure of God's grace and redemption," said Robert Gittelson, head of Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

The announcement comes as a bipartisan group of lawmakers in the Senate works to finish sweeping legislation by next month that would create a path to citizenship, as well as strengthen border security, install new measures to keep employers from hiring illegal immigrants, and improve legal immigration. The fate of the legislation is uncertain, especially in the GOP-led House, and the religious leaders said they would be lobbying lawmakers for passage.

It's all part of an increasingly prominent role evangelicals have been playing as the immigration debate moves forward. They met recently with President Barack Obama on the issue and last week announced they were running a radio ad on immigration in South Carolina, where Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a leader on the issue, is up for re-election.

Global rise in type 1 diabetes may be linked to reduced exposure to pathogens in early life

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Countries with lower mortality from infectious disease exhibit higher rates of type 1 diabetes, according to a new study by Dr. A. Abela and Professor S. Fava of the University of Malta. The findings, collating data from three major international studies and presented at the Society for Endocrinology annual conference in Harrogate UK, suggest that the as yet unexplained global rise in type 1 diabetes may be linked to reduced exposure to pathogens in early life.

Type 1 diabetes is caused when the immune system destroys the cells of the pancreas that release insulin, leaving the patient unable to control his own blood sugar. It is estimated to affect around half a million children worldwide, increasing in incidence by an estimated 3% every year. This increase is well documented and is linked to the developed world, but is so far unexplained -- various theories put forward include the 'hygiene hypothesis', which suggests that encounters between the developing immune system and micro-organisms such as bacteria and parasites are part of human evolution and may therefore protect against the development of auto-immunity.

The researchers investigated whether markers of infectious disease burden could be linked to the local incidence of type 1 diabetes. They used data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) DiaMond Project, WHO global burden of disease: 2004 update, and the Alexander Project, to correlate type 1 diabetes incidence by country with mortality from infectious disease and bacterial antibiotic susceptibility (which indicates antibiotic use and thus exposure to bacterial infection).

Type 1 diabetes rates were highest in countries with low mortality from infectious disease. This was true for total mortality from infectious disease (r=-0.35, p=0.008), as well as deaths caused specifically by diarrhea, respiratory disease, tuberculosis, and infections and parasitic disease (all p<0.05). They also found type 1 diabetes rates are significantly associated with the local susceptibility of the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae to all antibiotics studied.

This study suggests that there may be an association between type 1 diabetes rates and infectious disease burden. It is possible that the increasing global incidence of type 1 diabetes may be linked to lack of exposure to pathogens during early life. Whilst the data provide support for the hygiene hypothesis they do not prove it: the rise in type 1 diabetes rates is a complex problem and this study is of association only. Other potential contributing factors may show a similar geographical variation to infectious disease burden, as this is linked to the developed world. The authors are keen to use further studies to identify other environmental factors which may predispose to type 1 diabetes.

Study leader Professor Stephen Fava, Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta & Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Malta, said:

"The global rise in type 1 diabetes is an unexplained phenomenon. Many suggest that the exposure, or rather the lack of exposure, to infectious disease when young might be linked to the development of autoimmunity.

"Our data show that type 1 diabetes rates were highest in countries where markers of exposure to infectious disease were lowest. Incidence of type 1 diabetes was significantly linked to mortality from a variety of infectious diseases and to the local susceptibility of a common bacterium to antibiotics.

"These data provide support for the notion that the immune system can somehow become disordered and attack the body's own cells if it is not trained by regular exposure to micro-organisms -- the so called hygiene hypothesis. More research is needed to try to identify other environmental factors that may be linked to the continuing conundrum of rising type 1 diabetes rates."

PFT: 49ers still serious contenders for Asomugha

Green Bay Packers v New York GiantsGetty Images

The current free-agency market already has been called the worst ever by multiple NFL agents.? Though the warning signs were there, with plenty of teams having cap trouble and few having a major spending surplus, players and agents believed that the money would flow in the early days, like it always does.

But only a small handful of players got paid once the market opened.?? Sure, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco became the highest-paid player of all time, but that happened only because the Ravens opted not to choose between an exclusive franchise tender that would have cost them more than $19 million in 2013 cap room and a non-exclusive level that would have invited other teams to load up an offer sheet and happily give up a pair of first-round picks.? Beyond Flacco, no player has set a new high-water mark at his position.

As a result, many have gotten, and eventually will get, far less than they wanted.? Including receiver Greg Jennings.

According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jennings at one point during the 2012 season wanted $15 million per year.? And so he rejected $11 million per year from the Packers, ultimately getting only $9 million annually from the Vikings.

Along the way, Jennings rejected (per McGinn) a reduced offer of $8 million per year from the Packers, and a $6 million annual flier from the Patriots.

Few saw the crash of the free-agency market coming, and plenty of agents already are whispering about collusion.? It?s not suspected in the sense of broad spending restrictions, but with respect to quiet coordination among teams in an effort to set the market at certain positions.

The irony is that, for players and agents, coordination and collusion are permitted ? but they don?t seem to be doing much of it.? As a result, the teams have managed to land big-name players at bargain-basement costs, and the prices keep dropping at the NFL?s thrift shop.

Tips On How To Always Keep Yourself Secure Throughout ...

Making use of the subway through the late hours isn?t perfect because of security concerns. The same thing goes with buses. Meanwhile, night travels were nearly impossible for me to avoid. Often, I needed to do night as well as early-morning shifts at work. This was how I began thinking of protection that then encouraged me to buy Mace defense spray further.

Self-defense sprays, as non deadly weapons, is going to leave a burning experience on someone?s skin and within his eyes when utilized. The assailant would be hurt temporarily and the discomfort which he would experience could give me the opportunity that I required to get away.

Defense sprays would not cause anybody long-term injury. And, since I was not quite interested in harming another person, having one for self-defense wouldn?t leave me with unwanted guilt.

Having these motives in mind, I opted to look for something small, not complicated to make use of and easy to carry throughout travels. I would like an item which I could place inside my pouch or bag and this was at this point that my close friend introduced to me mini self defense sprays.

Small Self defense sprays were ideal for I could also simply hide one in my hand, thus leaving virtually any attacker clueless. He would never even suspect that I had with me a tiny item which could somehow leave him extremely hurting.

The key chain defense sprays that I found were good choices. I could just hang one in my bag and grab this if necessity arose.

Purchasing a Mace personal model hot pink 10% defense spray was an excellent decision for this provided me just what I wanted as protection. The 10-gram unit got 10 one-second bursts that it could spray for as much as eight to twelve feet. It had a flip-top safety cap and also key chain for additional usefulness.

Facing a tough and also surprising situation requires having the ability to act on it on instinct. And the notion to buy Mace pepper spray was my clever first step.

Keven B Wizdom has been training people how to operate self defense products to defend themselves for years. There are many options, like stun guns, pepper sprays and personal alarms. He offers complete help and instruction on how to operate the products. More Information

In Defense of Self: How the Immune System Really WorksIn Defense of Self: How the Immune System Really WorksWe live in a sea of seething microbial predators, an infinity of invisible and invasive microorganisms capable of setting up shop inside us and sending us to an early grave. The only thing keeping them out? The immune system.

William Clark's In Defense of Self offers a refreshingly accessible tour of the immune system, putting in layman's terms essential information that has been for too long the exclusive province of trained specialists. Clark explains how the immune system works by using powerful genetic, chemical, and cellular weapons to protect us from the vast majority of disease-causing microbes-bacteria, viruses, molds, and parasites. Only those microbes our bodies need to help us digest food and process vitamins are admitted. But this same system can endanger us by rejecting potentially life-saving organ transplants, or by overreacting and turning too much force against foreign invaders, causing serious--occasionally lethal--collateral damage to our tissues and resulting in autoimmune disease. In Defense of Self covers everything from how antibodies work and the strategies the body uses to distinguish self from not self to the nature of immunological memory, the latest approaches to vaccination, and how the immune system will react should we ever be subjected to a bioterrorist attack. Clark also offers important insights on the vital role that the immune system plays in cancer, AIDS, autoimmunity, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies and asthma, and other diseases.

Of special interest to all those suffering from diseases related to the immune system, as well as their families, In Defense of Self lucidly explains a system none of us could live without.
