Brooklyn-based poet wins Walt Whitman prize

NEW YORK (AP) ? A Brooklyn-based poet has won a prize named for one of the New York City borough's most famous former residents, Walt Whitman.

The Academy of American Poets announced Wednesday that Chris Hosea (hoh-ZAY'-uh) has won the Walt Whitman Award for a debut collection. Hosea will receive $5,000 and his book, "Put Your Hands In," will be published by Louisiana State University Press.

The winner was chosen by one of the greatest contemporary poets, John Ashbery. The Whitman award was established in 1975.
